      Summary

      The Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach, Football is responsible for supporting the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, Football by coaching Cadet-athletes, monitoring Cadet-athletes’ physical progress, overseeing the discipline and conduct of the Cadet-athletes. This position reports to the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, Football. All the duties of the position must be conducted in adherence with the policies, rules, and regulations of the United States Military Academy (“USMA”), Army West Point Athletic Association Inc. (“AWPAA”), the American Athletic Conference (“Conference”), and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (“NCAA”).


      Scope of Impact

      The responsibilities outlined in this job description are integral to the success of the AWPAA Football program and AWPAA. This position has high level influence in the recruiting, coaching and development of the Football program. This person represents the Football program at all times in public and is willing to do all duties needed of the program. Decisions made by this position impact the health and safety of Cadet-athletes and public relations for AWPAA and USMA. Failure to comply with NCAA rules could result in NCAA violations, negative publicity and a negative impact on recruiting. Decisions associated with designated responsibilities, will be made in conjunction with the Head Football Strength Coach and the designated Sport Administrator.


      Level of Decision Making

      The position acts as an extension of the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, Football and has direct access to the Cadet-athletes. The employee must maintain a high level of professionalism, moral and ethical character, and be a role model.


      Success Factors

      Success in this position will be evaluated by the Supervisor on the employee’s performance in a variety of areas, including but not limited to: Commitment to AWPAA Mission, Vision and Values; and supporting the AWPAA Strategic Plan and Priority Results.


      Essential Duties and Responsibilities

      60% Coaching

      • Promotes the philosophy and objectives of AWPAA; to include adhering to and enforcing all applicable policies and procedures, as well as rules and regulations of USMA, the Conference, and the NCAA.
      • Assists the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, Football with the ongoing teaching and instruction of Cadet-athletes in the performance of their sport such as, but not limited to, games, practices, individual and team workouts, and conditioning sessions.
      • Coach and instruct student-athletes individually and in groups and demonstrate techniques and skills required to be successful.
      • Plan and attend coaching and practice sessions, games, etc. in accordance with NCAA and conference regulations for specified positions.
      • Monitor and maintain the discipline and conduct of Cadet-athletes to support the image and reputation of the department and academy. Responsible for the development, safety and conduct of the cadet-athletes within the sport program.
      • Supervises assigned assistant coaches and other support staff to ensure compliance to applicable rules, policies, and procedures; provides orientation, training and guidance as needed; conducts performance evaluations.

      15% Recruiting

      • Has a role in the recruitment, and selection of prospective Cadet-athletes; ensures compliance with NCAA recruiting rules and regulations.

      10% Academics

      • Provide an overall positive educational environment for Cadet-athletes conducive to learning, athletic development, social growth, and preparing them for life beyond college.
      • Supervise, in conjunction with the athletic tutoring and advising program, the total academic progress of the team implementing corrective action plans through appropriate staff.

      10% Administrative

      • Work to integrate sports into the whole spectrum of USMA life to complement the AWPAA and USMA mission in the military community.
      • Assist the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, Football in the administration of the entire program, including, but not limited to daily practices, workout planning and implementation, equipment management, facilities scheduling, and budget.
      • Ensures safety of Cadet-athlete and coaching staff through careful monitoring of the condition of athletics equipment and facilities utilized by designated sport; submits reports of equipment required for repair, maintenance, and improvement of facilities to facility manager, when appropriate

      5% Engagement/Camps & Clinics

      • Perform both direct and indirect public relations functions including promotion, public speaking, community events, and through camps and/or clinics. Serve on departmental committees as requested.
      • Assist with departmental needs as requested; When practical under the circumstances, staff is encouraged to voluntarily attend athletic events to promote audience participation and support for AWPAA sport programs.
      • Participates in camps, clinics, exhibitions, and campus activities as approved by AWPAA NCAA Compliance Office.

      Work Conditions & Physical Requirements

      This position must be able to handle the physical demands of training sessions, recruiting events, and competition.

      • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
      • Occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
      • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
      • The person in this position frequently communicates with cadets to enhance their sport performance. Must be able to exchange accurate information with these cadets.
      • Must be able to detect performance issues from long distances.
      • Frequently moves equipment weighing up to 50 pounds across campus for various events.
      • Constantly works in outdoor weather conditions.

      Travel

      This position must be able to travel as needed to attend competition and professional development events. 12 scheduled home and away games and potential post season games.


      Required Qualifications

      • Bachelor’s degree or 2 years’ relevant experience.
      • CSCS or CSCCA, and CPR Certified. Must have experience with Olympic Lifting.
      • Ability to collaborate with coaching staff and in support the vision of Head Strength Coach.
      • Strong interpersonal skills.
      • Ability to interact effectively and professionally with coaches, administrators, Cadet-athletes, prospective Cadet-athletes, parents, etc.
      • Takes initiative, hardworking, ability/willingness to figure out solutions to problems independently, creative.
      • Extremely organized, detail oriented, self-starter and intrinsically motivated.
      • Strong management and leadership skills; Proven ability to multi-task effectively.
      • Ability to prioritize assignments and meet deadlines.


      Preferred Qualifications

      • Experience with Olympic Lifting.
      • Experience using Tendo units, Catapult GPS, and Microsoft Excel.


      Additional Eligibility Requirements

      • Must be eligible to work in the United States of America, without sponsorship.
      • Must be eligible to work on a military installation, including a willingness to submit to a background screen.
      • Must possess a valid driver’s license.


      Pay Range

      $50,000 - $60,000

      This job posting contains a pay range, which represents the range of salaries that AWPAA believes, in good faith, at the time of this posting that it might be willing to pay for the posted position. AWPAA expects to hire for this position near the middle of the range. Only in truly rare and exceptional circumstances, where an external candidate has experience, credentials or expertise that far exceed those required or expected for the position, would AWPAA consider paying a salary or rate near the higher end of the range.
