- Direct and provide strategic guidance to gift officers focused on building a strong pipeline of individual donors, at multiple gift levels, through multiple giving vehicles, in support of enterprise-wide strategic fundraising initiatives.
- Serve as a resource, role model, and coach to members of the IG team for prospect strategy and solicitation.
- Develop performance standards and expectations for gift officer activity and create accountability measures to help drive fundraising productivity.
- Collaborate with colleagues across the Development Department to establish standards and ensure the IG program is adequately supported by prospect research, operations, analytics, etc.
- Cultivate relationships with medical and administrative leadership across the organization to collaboratively drive fundraising strategy and identify gift opportunities that are aligned with HSS leadership priorities.
- Assess the abilities and opportunities for members of the team, create professional development plans for team members, ensure adherence to policies and standards, hold regular and ongoing discussions on performance, and conduct formal performance reviews, at least annually.
- Hire, onboard, and train new members of IG Team and participate in the identification, hiring, onboarding and mentoring of colleagues across the Department.
- Cultivate and maintain a robust professional network, participate in industry associations, and stay informed on best practices in the field.
- In partnership with the VP and AVP Operations, create Development program goals with the objective of building the pipeline of donors at each gift level, from annual to transformational.
- Develop a Major Gift and Leadership Annual Giving philosophy, unique and meaningful to HSS, incorporating industry best-practice, that will guide the work of the IG team and create procedural standards and accountability.
- Work collaboratively with the Development fundraising leadership, as well as Service Line and HSS leadership, to set philanthropic priorities focused on advancing HSS’s campaign and strategic priorities at the Service Line/Department and enterprise level.
- Set the financial performance goals for IG Team and participate in goal setting for the Development program broadly.
- Along with AVP Operations, co-lead the creation of new standards and policies to govern grateful patient fundraising, portfolio management, prospect assignment, qualification, donor development, tracking and reporting, in collaboration with other key stakeholders in the Department.
- Create a plan for individual gift retention and renewal at the LAG and MG levels to build donor pipeline.
- Analyze the performance of IG team and identify opportunities to create efficiencies and growth.
- Serve on the Development Leadership Team and help set standards for employee engagement and overall team performance, as well as identify challenges, and recommend opportunities and solutions in a transparent change-oriented environment.
- Demonstrate fundraising success by soliciting and closing gifts, independently and as part of a team, at the leadership annual, major, and principal gifts levels with a primary focus on solicitations in the $100,000 - $1,000,000 range.
- Work collaboratively with the Principal and Transformational Gifts Team on strategy and gift conversations at the 7- to -9-figure levels.
- Within 12 months start actively managing a personal portfolio of current and potential prospects with interests that cut across clinical and geographic boundaries, and tapping into the expertise of colleagues that serve as the subject matter experts on the entire range of fundraising priorities and gift opportunities.
- Lead by example by pursuing opportunities for collaborative gifts to both basic and clinical research, and blended asks incorporating a variety of priorities.
- Initiate and conduct personal meetings with prospects and donors throughout the year and lead/participate in solicitations with Development colleagues to meet and exceed individual and institutional goals.
- Exemplifies the mission, vision, and values of HSS.
- Builds trust-based, respectful, collegial and effective relationships with clinicians, administrators, volunteers, and colleagues as part of a team in a complex academic medical setting.
- Adhere to HIPAA privacy principles and practices as defined by law.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned.
- Bachelor's degree required.
- A minimum of ten years major gift fundraising and development management experience required, strong preference for experience in health system, academic medical center, or hospital fundraising.
- Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills.
- Exceptional interpersonal relationship development skills to be applied to donors, clinical and administrative leadership, and team.
- Collaborative team player; creative and resourceful; entrepreneurial spirit; able to thrive in a fast-paced, high-performing environment; works productively with diverse constituencies.

Assistant Vice President, Individual Giving
PRIMARY FUNCTION/PURPOSE:
Reporting to the Senior Vice President, and working in close collaboration with the Vice President, the AVP, Individual Giving will be a key member of the Development leadership team and will help guide the strategic vision for the HSS Development Office. This person will be responsible for developing and implementing the philanthropic program for leadership annual and major giving, setting new standards for the grateful patient philanthropy program. Also, this person will be a key strategist on pipeline building across all gift bands and priorities.
The successful candidate will have a track record of leadership in healthcare development programs, and will be an innovative, trusted partner and collaborator, experienced fundraiser, manager and mentor, who will bring best practice knowledge and creative solutions to the HSS Development program.
The Individual Giving (IG) team focuses on grateful patient fundraising at the leadership annual giving (LAG) and major gift (MG) levels, as well as at the principal gift (PG) level, in collaboration with members of the Principal and Transformational giving team. The IG team of gift officers covers key orthopedic and clinical service lines, as well as regional efforts. As the leader of a high-performing and data driven team, the AVP, Individual Giving will lead by example, inspiring hard work and commitment to mission, demonstrating fundraising success while modeling the qualities of a responsible and principled leader.
