      Description

      We are seeking an Assistant Vice President of Commercial Lines Underwriting who wants to make an impact on the future of a successful, growing property & casualty insurance company.

      What You'll Do:

      Leadership and oversight of commercial underwriting staff
      • Promote a customer-centric culture; and create a positive learning environment, which values communication & teamwork, work ethic, know-how & expertise, and personal ownership
      • Supervise, guide and develop assigned personnel with regular touchpoints, periodic goal setting, performance reviews, and routine feedback.
      • Support supervisors in establishing individual goals and development plans for staff.
      • Set, communicate, and monitor annual department goals.
      • Responsible for underwriting training & development planning.
      • Partner with underwriting and quality assurance leaders to manage staff authority levels

      Utilize analytics and business skills to maintain profitability and improve efficiency across the organization.
      • Review complex commercial policies, ensuring adherence to company guidelines and making critical underwriting decisions.
      • Champion innovative methods and tools to drive underwriting efficiency and profitable growth.
      • Help shape underwriting strategies that align with the company's goals and continuously improve underwriting processes.
      • Ensure commercial underwriting practices comply with regulatory standards and company policies.
      • Analyze and report on underwriting performance, profitability, and exposure to senior management

      Responsible for executing activities which drive commercial lines underwriting profit, growth and expense objectives.
      • Monitor and report to executive leadership on key performance indicators and progress to goals.
      • Manage department expenses, while supporting other combined ratio objectives.
      • Establish key underwriting & product tactical initiatives; and ensure execution to meet or exceed annual profit, costs, and production milestones.
      • Partner with Product leaders/owners to ensure rate adequacy across commercial lines, products, and states, to achieve profit and growth goals.
      • Partner with the Agency Management/Sales team to ensure top-notch customer service and identify business development opportunities.
      • Support underwriting, product, and agency management initiatives, such as: workflow, marketing initiatives (new state research, new distribution, new products, etc.).
      • Develop and update underwriting guidelines
      • Ensure necessary reinsurance placements are placed
      • Ensure superior service standards are met


      What We Are Looking For:
      • College degree or comparable work experience.
      • 10+ years commercial P&C underwriting experience, preferably with admitted carriers.
      • Team leadership experience or direct supervision of underwriters
      • Comprehension of ISO rates, rules and forms
      • Multi-state underwriting experience and familiarity with statutory regulations
      • Solid experience/familiarity with reinsurance, particularly property facultative
      • Ability to oversee small projects
      • Familiarity or experience with predictive models and/or third-party data in underwriting applications
      • Ability to handle pressure situations
      • Ability to multi-task and thrive in a fast-paced, small-business environment
      • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
      • Excellent leadership skills.
      • Ability to work across departments and bring key stakeholders together for common goals
      • Professional designations such as CPCU, CIC, AU, ARe, etc. are a plus
      • Experience with regionalized carrier structure is a plus


      This position is being hired with a flexible work location and may be filled at either an intermediate or advanced level, commensurate with experience.
