      Job summary

      This is an exciting opportunity for you to join a centre of Pathology excellence at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB), one of the largest teaching hospitals in England. We have state of the art facilities across 4 sites.

      We are looking for an experienced HCPC registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist to be appointed as a Deputy Training Lead within the Biochemistry, Department at the Queen Elizabeth hospital. In this role you will be expected to support and deputise for the Band 7 Training Lead with regards to all training related matters including the implementation, delivery, development and maintenance of the training and competency of staff within the department.

      Due to the nature of this role, it is essential that you have an understanding of specialist healthcare science activities acquired through additional training or knowledge to post graduate level or equivalent e.g., Post registration specialist competency portfolio. Evidence of continuing professional development in accordance with HCPC guidelines will be requested at the interview stage so ensure to bring this along with you. This role is primarily based at the Heartlands Hospital but there will be a future requirement to work across all sites that are part of UHB.

      Clinical Biochemistry is part of Pathology Services providing a patient focused quality service that is committed to the trust values of being Kind, Connected and Bold.

      Main duties of the job

      The candidate will be expected to have an excellent understanding of all areas within Clinical Biochemistry, working in different sections on a rotational basis maintaining skills and competency.

      These include:

      * Maintain compliance with good laboratory practice, quality assurance procedures in accordance with UKAS ISO 15189 standards.

      * Support the Training Lead to ensure full compliance with all statutory responsibilities for staff, training, education, competencies and continuing professional development.

      * Work with the Training lead to develop a comprehensive and workable training and competency programme for all staff in collaboration with managers, specialist, senior and advanced BMS as appropriate, including developing tutorials and educational lectures.

      * Support the departmental Training Lead to liaise, as appropriate, with external bodies including professional body, IBMS and Higher Education Institutions.

      * Monitor training issues and non-conformances arising from audits.

      *Support the Training Leads to produce a departmental progress report for training meetings.

      *Assist the Training Lead to oversee the work of medical laboratory assistants, trainee biomedical scientists and post registration biomedical scientists.

      *Undertake staff appraisals following Trust policies and procedures.

      *Ensure that all staff receives an appropriate induction.

      *To safely handle, use and dispose of biological samples.
