      Job summary

      The post holder will be based in A&E X-ray and will have operational responsibility for all 5 general X-ray rooms, theatre examinations, and plain film reporting at the Trust. Responsibilities will include governance of competency and training assessment, chairing the plain film discrepancy meeting, oversight of the image optimisation group, rostering of staff across the whole department, coordinating theatre and mobile examinations, and ensuring compliance with equipment servicing and planned preventative maintenance.

      Main duties of the job

      The post holder would be based in A&E X-ray and be operationally responsible for:

      • Ensuring all plain film patients receive safe and high-quality imaging.
      • Ensuring all patients from A&E are imaged promptly, meeting joint KPIs, with appropriate escalation to A&E.
      • Ensuring all theatre cases are booked appropriately, and demand managed.
      • Ensuring demand for IP, GP and OP plain film images is managed across the 2 floors to minimise the wait time for all patients.
      • Ensuring there is safe staffing and patient flow at all times.

      In addition, the post holder will:

      • Be responsible for the governance and maintenance of X-ray equipment, including QA, for investigating incidents and for reducing risk to patients.
      • Be responsible for rostering of staff to prevent a plain film reporting backlog.
      • Chair the radiology radiation governance meeting.
      • Have oversight of the plain film discrepancy meeting and the image optimisation group.
      • Ensure the training of student radiographers is fit for purpose and mentor newly trained radiographers, ensuring that core competencies and sign off are achieved in a timely fashion.
      • Be an active participant in the audit and the quality improvement cycle.
      • Act as deputy for the Head of Radiology.
      • Act as radiation protection supervisor for plain film imaging and fluoroscopy in theatre, investigate radiation incidents, act on advice to prevent recurrence and ensure learning from incidents is shared across the team.

      Job description

      Job responsibilities

      In addition to the core duties outlined above, the post holder will be responsible for:

      Management and Leadership

      • Assist the Radiology Management Team with the supervision, support, training and development of Radiographers, Radiographic Department Assistants and Assistant Radiographic Practitioners as required.
      • Assist the Radiology Management Team with recruitment and selection of Radiographers, Radiographic Department Assistants and Assistant Radiographic Practitioners as required.
      • Work closely with the Radiology Quality Manager to ensure all governance procedures are up to date and in line with the Quality Standard for Imaging.
      • Effective staff communication both within the Radiology Department and the wider Trust.
      • Responsible for the safe use and maintenance of complex, high capital cost specialist imaging equipment.
      • Perform the local induction of new/locum radiographic staff.

      Financial Responsibilities

      • Supporting procurement in provision of clinical advice by reviewing quality of consumables used against best value for money, as required.
      • Contribute to Divisional Business Plan.

      Core Knowledge and Understanding

      • Understand the organisational structure and working practices of the organisation with regard to the provision of high-quality plain film imaging services, and Trust policies relevant to the specialist area.
      • Possess a high degree of personal and professional autonomy with the ability to make sound clinical judgements and critical decisions regarding the patients welfare.
      • Have a working knowledge and be guided by broad professional/clinical policies and standards e.g., those set by the Society and College of Radiographers, the Healthcare Professions Council, and the National Institute for Clinical Excellence.

      Education, Training, Research and Development:

      • Have the appropriate interpersonal skills to teach junior/student radiographers.
      • Develop and support the extension of the radiographers role as appropriate to service needs and in partnership with the radiologists.
      • Undertake an annual Training Needs Analysis for the radiography team in line with service requirements and strategic objectives.
      • Participate in the planning and management of student placement and apprenticeship schemes.
      • Undertake measurement and evaluation of service provision and current practice through evidence-based practice projects and audit
      • To demonstrate active commitment to the development of junior staff, assist with their practical training and education and support their development needs.

      Information & Record Keeping

      • Be fully competent in the operation and utilisation of the Radiology Information System (RIS) and other associated computerised systems necessary for the allocated area of work.
      • Participate in audit projects, including gathering evidence for best practice assessment, in order to improve the delivery of the radiology service.
      • Respect patient confidentiality and do not disclose patient information which falls outside guidelines for disclosure.
      • The post will require participation in multi-disciplinary teams to design and implement information systems which may be for the imaging directorate alone, or which may be implemented across the organisation and beyond, (e.g., PACS, electronic patient records across the community).
