Job Responsibilities

1. Operates an electrically operated lift bridge.
• Tests to ascertain that all bells, lights, and warning signals are operational when starting shift.
• Opens the bridge for passage of boats and closes the bridge following passage.
• Operates electronic and manual controls for electric and gasoline engine drive operating machinery.25%
2. Maintains constant watch by sight and ear for signals from boats and barges.15%
3. Maintains navigation, roadway, and traffic control lighting and other traffic signaling devices
• Inspects navigation, roadway, and traffic control traffic lighting and other traffic signaling. devices for proper operation before.
• Reports any deficiencies for repair.10%
4. Monitors supplies and prepares reports.
• Checks quantities and submits requests for needed supplies together with routine reports of supplies used.
• Obtains information and completes timely written reports for any accident occurring on the bridge or involving the bridge structure or pier protection.5%
5. Performs janitorial duties on the bridge tender house and Local Control Center.
• Washes walls, floors, windows.
• Paints and makes minor repairs.5%
6. Maintains records of names, sizes, direction, number, and time passage of vessels, and the time of bridge openings.5%
7. Observes the operation of machinery and reports needed maintenance for corrective action.5%
8. Performs all other duties as assigned which are reasonably related to the duties enumerated above.Minimum Qualifications
1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of elementary school.
2. One (1) year general mechanical experience.Preferred Qualifications
1. Prefers working knowledge of the operation of an electrically controlled bridge.
2. Prefers ability to keep legible records, make reports, and follow printed rules and regulations/instructions.
3. Prefers knowledge of the rules and regulations governing navigation of inland waterways.Conditions of Employment
