- Support Salary Scale Grade S04: $18.51 per hour; starting
- Maintain excellent attendance and punctuality on the job.
- Responsible for arriving at the bus at the appropriate time to check equipment and leave on time.
- Escort students on and off buses and across roadways.
- Ability to operate special equipment on buses (lift, service door, 2-way radio, etc.)
- Secure students for safe bus transport.
- Assists substitute driver with route directions.
- Assist driver while backing school bus.
- Assist driver in maintaining school bus sanitation and appearance.
- Assist in performing bus emergency evacuation and drill.
- Keeps required equipment clean and in good working order.
- Gather and maintain confidential student medical data sheets and daily attendance records.
- Respond in an effective and tactful manner with emotionally disabled students.
- Remain calm in an emergency; quickly and safely evacuating students when needed.
- Ability to place hazard equipment (triangles, flares) as required.
- Report any unsafe practices to the appropriate transportation manager.
- Treat all students and parents with respect and compassion.
- High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.
- Ability to read and write as demonstrated by successfully passing FCPS pre-service instructional training course as required pursuant to COMAR 13a.06.08.
- Ability to read/write the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public and students.
- Ability to use and maintain FCPS email account.
- Must be capable of lifting a minimum of 50 lbs. with frequent climbing.
- Capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.

Salary
Under the Fair Labor and Standards Act this position is non-exempt from overtime. Actual salary placement will be in accordance with the salary procedures of the Frederick County Public School System.
Role
School Bus Assistants are responsible for the care and safety of students with disabilities being transported to and from their homes and schools. Assistants work involves managing student behavior by creating a positive and safe environment on the bus. Assistants must exercise constant alertness to student’s physical needs and react promptly in the event of seizures or other medical emergencies. Assistants must be familiar with all students assigned to the bus.
“Note” – All bus assistants start out as sub status bus assistants. Bus assistants can apply for benefited routes as they become available once final certification is successfully completed.
Essential Functions
Reporting directly to the Transportation Manager, the Bus Assistant performs the following duties:
Performs other duties as assigned by the Transportation Manager.

Experience in the care of students with varied disabilities. Ability to communicate in sign language desirable, but not required.
