Child Care Counselors provide support and positive role modeling for emotionally troubled children or adolescents; structure, supervise, and manage group dynamics; maintain a nurturing and safe environment; actively participate in weekly team meetings; make important contributions to the children’s/adolescents’ treatment; and gain valuable experience in preparation for graduate school and/or advancement at St. Ann’s Home.
Another focus of the child care role involves carrying out more concrete parenting functions such as preparing meals, buying clothing with children, and attending to certain unit housekeeping and school liaison duties. These seemingly mundane and often time-consuming functions embody, in concrete form, an essential aspect of caring. While it may be easily overlooked, the way these functions are carried out represents one important way in which children feel themselves accepted, valued, and nurtured.
Child care counselors should be able to react quickly, drive a motor vehicle, participate in activities, sports and recreation. Child care counselors should be able to frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds, reach, push and pull, and climb stairs. This position is based on a 48 hour work week. Child care counselors are expected to work extended shifts which may be up to 24 hours or occasionally may be longer. Position requires extended periods of awake time. Child care counselors need to have good judgment skills, be able to work in a crisis situation, and be capable of independent thinking. Frequently the restraining, lifting or carrying of tantruming children is necessary.
Qualifications include a Bachelor’s Degree preferred or experience/skills in working with our population. Ideal candidates will demonstrate the ability to work effectively, collaboratively and respectfully with individuals, care providers, family and community members, and will require flexibility to work varying hours to meet the needs of our residents, as well as effective oral and written communication skills. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
