      The Child Life Assistant position is 32 hours per week (4 8-hr shifts with rotating weekends). Child Life assistants will work to enhance patient care, provide and engage children in developmentally appropriate activities, assist volunteers, and work alongside Certified Child Life Specialists of the department to meet the psychosocial needs of children receiving care at Levine Childrens.

      Child Life has been a part of Atrium Health's Carolinas Medical Center since 1977, and at Levine Children's since its opening in 2007. The Child Life Department has more than 44 staff members, including a Child Life manager, two Child Life lead positions, Child Life Specialists & Child Life Education Specialists and Child Life Assistants. Our Child Life team covers a broad scope of care within the Levine Children's Service Line, from Emergency Care to Transplant Programs, Clinical Trials, inpatient and outpatient care.       Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital (LCH) has taken the community to another level of service in order to provide care for the growing population of children in our region. At 247 beds, LCH is the largest children’s hospital between Atlanta and Washington DC. It serves high patient acuity as the flagship children’s hospital within the innovative Atrium Health and offers a full complement of over 125 pediatric subspecialists in over 25 different pediatric specialties. There are 4 pediatric hospitalist teams, a 20-bed PICU (including Cardiac ICU), an 85-bed NICU, and an inpatient pediatric rehabilitation facility. Levine Children’s also has the region’s first 24/7 emergency room just for kids, staffed by doctors trained in pediatric emergency medicine. LCH has repeatedly been ranked among the “Best Children’s Hospitals” in the nation by US News & World Report.

      Job Summary

      Promotes development in infants, children, adolescents and families through diversionary activities to maintain normal living patterns and minimizing psychological trauma to hospitalized children. Provides opportunities for play, self expression, family involvement and peer interaction. Maintains competency as appropriate to the ages, developmental stages, and special needs of the patients served.



      Essential Functions

      • Plans and/or provides individual and group activities for ambulatory and nonambulatory patients.
      • Assists with special groups, activities and events.
      • Responsible for the 7A Playroom and 7C Activity Room, its contents (cleaning and maintenance) and stocking of supplies.
      • Collaborates with the Child Life Specialists to provide activities that assist patients and families in dealing with and understanding the issues of hospitalization and illness.
      • Provides supervision of playroom volunteers.
      • Assists with inventory, ordering and distribution of supplies and pharmaceuticals excluding controlled substances.

      Physical Requirements

      Work requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting, stooping, bending, reaching, pushing and pulling. Must be able to lift and support 20 pounds of weight in handling patients, medical equipment and supplies.



      Education, Experience and Certifications

      High School Diploma or GED required. Verifiable experience with children of all ages. General knowledge and understanding of normal growth and development in children and adolescents. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Good organization and time management skills are required. Maintains a calm, professional disposition.
