      This position supports the CPED Communications Team in telling the department’s story to both internal and external audiences. The position exists to research, write, edit, and produce content for internal and external communications for the City of Minneapolis.

      CPED is a large department with many different programs and policies that impact the Minneapolis community, and this position assists in sharing those impacts, as well as share timely information. CPED’s goals are:
      • Leverage CPED investments and resources to foster economic development and revitalization in challenged areas.
      • Plan, design and develop sustainable, healthy, livable, high-performance, and resource-efficient communities.
      • Strengthen CPED’s role as a leader, innovator, and a key driver of our city’s regional competitiveness.

      Work Location
      This position currently works a hybrid schedule with some days working remotely and some days working in the office.
      • Collaborate with internal and external partners to research, write, edit, and produce news releases, articles, newsletters, brochures, and web items to inform various audiences, including residents, neighborhood groups, and elected officials.
      • Perform plain language review of CPED content.
      • Assist with design and review of CPED reports.
      • Assists Collaboration Analyst II (CPED web manager) with website updates.
      • Develop and carry out communications strategies to promote effective communication regarding core services, City policies, and programs.
      • Develop and carry out proactive initiatives to highlight the accomplishments of and attributes of the department and the City.
      • Create communications tools and resources to support departments and employee resource groups.
      • Develop and conduct trainings for City employees in communications-related subjects.
      • Provide assistance in strategic planning, media relations, crisis communications, web, television, and social media strategies, and oversight of published materials.
      • Coordinate cultural radio shows by identifying topics, scheduling guests and interpreters, and writing scripts.

      Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Communications/Marketing or equivalent.

      MINIMUM EXPERIENCE
      Three years of related experience

      Equivalency
      An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.

      Desirable Qualifications -- Language
      Bilingual skills in Spanish, Somali, Amharic, Oromo, Hmong, Vietnamese and/or Lao.

      Desirable Qualifications -- Cultural competency
      Ability to relate and work effectively with people from diverse cultural, economic and ethnic backgrounds.

      Selection Process
      The selection process will consist of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience (100%). It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score (70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed on the interview process. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process.

      Background Check
      The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought.       Union Representation
      This position is represented by a collective bargaining agreement between the City of Minneapolis and the Minneapolis Professional Employees Association (MPEA).       Eligible List Statement
      The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration. This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire two months after it has been established.

      Interview Selection
      The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list. If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate’s education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position.
      • Experience developing communications strategies/writing and designing visuals/story telling through other mediums.
      • Developed writing skill and good knowledge of written, visual, and spoken communication techniques including plain language.
      • Ability to handle media relations.
      • Intermediate project management skills.
      • Strong knowledge of modern office computer software and of desk top publication software.
      • Intermediate research and analytical skills.
      • Strong verbal communication skills.
