      Job summary

      We are seeking to appoint a substantive consultant psychiatrist to join the Mental Health Liaison Team based at Salford Royal Hospital.

      This is for an existing post, the successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team operating a CORE 24 service.

      This post is an exciting opportunity to be involved in shaping and modernising mental health services in Greater Manchester.

      The Liaison Service receives referrals from Salford Royal Hospital wards and emergency department. The service accepts referrals of patients of all ages, but the team's consultants only sees patient over 16 years old.

      The service has a 'can do' attitude and aims to work in a flexible manner and be as helpful as possible. Objectives of the service are to provide high quality assessments and effective liaison between service providers in the Mental Health Trust and the Acute Hospital Trust.

      The service offers comprehensive psychiatric assessment, and further management if required whilst the patient remains an in-patient in Salford Royal Hospital.

      The team provides effective liaison between the services which include Later Life Services, Acute Adult Psychiatry in-patients, Community Mental Health teams, Home Treatment Service, Emergency Services at Salford Royal, Acute in-patient wards, and elderly care wards.

      Main duties of the job

      The post holder will work alongside the existing consultant liaison psychiatrist. The post holder will be expected to predominantly assess and manage adult of working age (AOWA) people admitted to Salford Royal, and emergency assessments in the emergency department and also provide the consultant input for the intermediate care unit.

      There are 2 other substantive Liaison Consultant Psychiatrists within the team. One of them predominantly works with older age (OA) adults in the most acute areas of the hospital. The other is dual trained and works across both AOWA and OA. They share responsibility for the complex working age patients on the main medical and surgical wards.

      The post holder will also be expected to cross cover for the other liaison colleagues, especially for annual leave exceptional circumstances. The division of referrals of Salford Royal in-patients will be dependent on who is available to respond within commissioned expected response times.
