Job summary
East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is an integrated provider of acute and community care to a population of over half a million. We are seeking a consultant with drive, commitment and enthusiasm who will bring clinical leadership to our team and provide high quality care to our patients.
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who will bring their skills, knowledge and experience to our existing teams, in the continued development of our Respiratory service. You will work within a multi-disciplinary team, closely with colleagues across Medicine and Emergency Care as well as other specialties and community services. Clinical governance, education, training and research are important to us, and successful candidates will have ample opportunity to contribute.
Candidates with areas of clinical special interest will be welcomed and such skills and knowledge will be accommodated whenever possible. In particular, interests in Sleep Medicine, Interstitial Lung Disease, Asthma, and Pleural Disease are welcomed. This is a full-time post, but we are open to negotiating additional planned activity sessions and flexible working.

Main duties of the job
The Respiratory Directorate provides a comprehensive service: with 4 inpatient wards, a Respiratory Assessment Unit carrying out pleural procedures, bronchoscopies andEBUS; and a Chest Clinic with a range of subspecialty clinics such as TB, Sleep and Home Ventilation, Lung Cancer, Asthma, ILD, and Cough. Some clinics are delivered at satellite clinics across East Lancashire.
You would be part of a large multiple disciplinary team consisting of 10 consultants, a specialist doctor and a specialty doctor, a full complement of middle and junior doctors; advanced nurse practitioners, specialist nurses and physiologists.

Job responsibilities
Applicants must be on the General Medical Council Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if in a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the GMC Specialist Register to be considered for a consultant appointment by the Advisory Appointments Committee. Applicants must continue to hold a Licence to Practise.
The post holder may be required to cover some outpatient clinics at peripheral sites depends on the needs of the service. Currently these are at Burnley General Hospital, Accrington Victoria Hospital and Rossendale Hospital.
The respiratory wards and the chest clinic are on the Blackburn site. There are four wards currently covered by the respiratory team with a total of 87 beds. The post holder would cover a proportion of these beds, carrying out daily review of inpatients. The respiratory team do not cover outlier patients on other wards. The clinics will typically be based on templates consisting of 30 minutes for new patients and 15 minutes for reviews, the clinic template is generally for four new and eight follow up patients per clinic.
The PA allocation for this post is 7.5 DCC and 2.5 SPA but we are open to negotiate additional planned activity sessions.
This post will be based primarily at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital. The post involves out-patient and in-patient duties, and a regular commitment to on call for medicine. The post holder will participate in a 1:8 rota for weekend duties (seven-hour shifts Sat and Sun) for respiratory medicine. There is also an on-call commitment to general medicine. This is 1 in 21 (8pm 8am) and from home; this on-call attracts Category A (3%). On call is mainly advice over the phone, though may require return to the hospital rarely.
