      The Department of Environmental Services (DES), a highly valued, innovative organization that takes pride in providing customers with outstanding services, is seeking a night-shift vacancy Control Center Technician in the Control Center of the Water/Sewer/Streets (WSS) Bureau. The WSS Bureau is responsible for construction, maintenance, installation, meter reading and repair of the County's street maintenance and water distribution system.

      Specific duties include:

      • Responding to citizen/service phone calls and online requests regarding water, sewer, and streets concerns such as water main breaks, sewer issues, no water, low water pressure, discolored water, potholes etc.;
      • Conducting initial investigation of customer inquiries, communicating with citizens on site, making inquiries to assess the nature of calls;
      • Dispatching proper crews to road service or standby personnel to investigate citizen concerns, and perform necessary repairs;
      • Monitoring the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to manage the County's water distribution system;
      • Monitoring pump stations for security and proper operations;
      • Locating, inspecting, and making minor adjustments to residential meters;
      • Supporting Water/Sewer/Streets crews by obtaining Miss Utility clearances for emergencies;
      • Supporting the operations and maintenance teams by creating and retrieving service requests and work orders using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS); and
      • Performing stocking/maintenance of emergency vehicles, and emergency street repairs such as filling small potholes when there are hazardous conditions.

      This position may be filled at Control Center Technician I or II level based on experience and required certification.

      Minimum requirements for Control Center Technician I and II:

      • High School Diploma/Equivalent; and
      • Two (2) years of experience in utility maintenance field and customer service environments which include one or more of the following: construction, installation, maintenance, meter reading and repair functions in water, sewer, and streets operations or system operations in the water distribution area, or closely related environment.
      For Control Center Technician II level:

      • Must possess a valid Class V Waterworks Operator License at time of hire.
      Substitution: Additional experience can substitute for the education on a year for year basis.

      Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with a Class V Waterworks License, certification(s) in First Aid, or Confined Space Entry, and/or experience in one or more of the following:

      • Providing customer service to internal and external customers for a public/private utility company or for service requests by telephone;
      • Responding to requests, assessing nature of the problem, and dispatching service requests in a trades or utility based environment;
      • Repairing water distribution systems or related area;
      • Monitoring SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems; and/or
      • Using a computer maintenance management system (CMMS) or other work order tracking systems.

      The applicant must possess a valid driver license and authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the official driving record. Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

      Ability to obtain additional work-related certification(s) such as First Aid and/or Confined Space Entry during employment.

      Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor work is performed in all types of weather conditions and often near moving vehicles and mechanical parts, electrical currents, exposure to high heat, chemicals, and/or biohazardous waste.

      The employee may spend extended periods of time sitting, but may be required to stand, walk, crouch, stoop, bend, or lift, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

      The employee may be required to wear common protective gear or safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, gloves, hearing protection, or hard hats while working outdoors.
      Work Hours: Current vacancy is for C-Shift, 12:00 a.m. (midnight) to 8:00 a.m., including weekends. However, employees are subject to occasional shift rotation, based on department need. Employees must be available for call-back for emergency situations (i.e., water main break and snow removal, etc.). See Shifts below.

      Shift A: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
      Shift B: 4:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.
      Shift C: 12:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m.

      Shift premium is paid for all days worked on shifts B and C.

      The salary listed above encompasses the entry salary for Control Center Technician I, up to the maximum salary for the Control Center Technician II. Salary ranges for both levels are as follows:

      Control Center Technician I: $55,660.80 - $85,030.40
      Control Center Technician II: $60,985.60 - $93,080.00

      The official title of this position is Water/Sewer/Streets Control Center Technician I/II.
