- Work collaboratively on exhibitions, projects, and contemporary art initiatives with the curatorial team and cross-departmentally.
- Develop and realize innovative exhibitions, programs and initiatives, thereby impacting the intellectual and artistic fabric of the institution.
- Curate dynamic, inclusive presentations of the permanent collection.
- Work with the chief curator and director in identifying acquisitions and cultivating gifts to support collecting priorities for the collection.
- Develop new and deepen existing relationships with the contemporary art community and organizational partners locally, nationally, and internationally.
- Produce original research (catalogues, essays, articles, lectures, gallery talks, web-based media), and participate in conferences and workshops related to art, humanities, and intersectional scholarship.
- Collaborate with advancement team in writing grants and proposals, as well as in cultivating prospective donors, collectors, and members.
- Supervise and mentor fellows, interns, and paid staff as requested.
- Perform additional management and administrative tasks as assigned.
- Prioritize diversity, equity, inclusion and access in all aspects of curatorial work.
- MA required (or Phd) in Art History or other related academic area.
- Knowledge of modern and contemporary art and art practices, with an emphasis on global contemporary art.
- Expertise in LatinX, Latin American, or Art of the Americas desired.
- Five years or more of curatorial practice, preferably in a museum or other cultural institution.
- Strong track record of organizing exhibitions, authoring publications, and public speaking.
- Enthusiasm for new forms of engagement in curatorial practice.
- Strong collaborator and community builder.
- Ability to build positive and effective relationships with artists, members, donors, co-workers, and the broader community.
- Excellent writing, research, speaking, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to attend evening and weekend events and travel both domestically and internationally.

The Phillips Collection is an art museum founded by Duncan Phillips and Marjorie Acker Phillips in 1921 as the Phillips Memorial Gallery located in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, DC Phillips was the grandson of James H.
POSITION OBJECTIVE:
The Curator of Global Contemporary Art will further the museum’s lifelong commitment to presenting, acquiring and fostering greater understanding of contemporary art through an exploration of its continuity with the art of the past. The Curator will bring bold, imaginative thinking to The Phillips Collection, encompassing different global perspectives and engaging with a multiplicity of transnational, interdisciplinary narratives in contemporary art of the 21st century. The Curator will provide thought leadership and an energizing vision for curatorial programs and initiatives that enhance The Phillips Collection’s commitment to broadening the canon of contemporary art to tell more inclusive narratives that respond to pressing issues of our day.
The Phillips Collection seeks to expand its collection and exhibition program in contemporary LatinX, Latin American, Asian, and African and African diasporic art. The Curator of Global Contemporary Art will further the museum’s mission to serve the nation’s rapidly evolving diverse communities through new acquisitions and inclusive exhibitions and programs aligned with our strategic priorities and in support of our mission.
