      Position Overview

      The Research Assistant will support the BC Entanglement Mitigation Coordinator within the Pacific Program in efforts to reduce whale entanglements in fishing gear. This role will involve assisting with the planning and execution of on-demand gear testing and trials, maintaining communication with harvesters, and supporting quantitative research projects assessing the risk of entanglement to large whale species in BC waters.

      Key responsibilities include conducting at-sea trials, assisting with the maintenance and repair of innovative fishing gear, and collecting and managing field data. The Research Assistant will work closely with both the Entanglement Mitigation Coordinator and the Fisheries Management Specialist to support quantitative threat-based risk assessments.

      This position requires strong interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to manage and analyze data effectively, and the flexibility to work extended hours in field settings as needed.

      Duties and Responsibilities
      • Conduct occasional on-demand gear trials with crab and prawn harvesters (First Nations, recreational and/or commercial)
      • Document on-demand gear trials with photo and videos
      • Promote program through events and connecting with harvesters
      • Maintain on-demand gear after on-demand gear trials
      • Participate in meeting with possible data contributors and collaborators
      • Maintain database on whale occurrence from multiple data sources
      • Investigate the use of acoustic data in occurrence models
      • Explore the state of acoustic data of whale occurrence in British Columbia and possible contributors
      • Literature scan of marine mammal behaviours and use of space for future modelling


      Education, Experience, and Abilities

      Education:

      • College diploma in a related field such as Marine Science, Fisheries, or Oceanography, or an equivalent combination of education and experience


      Experience:
      • Minimum of 9 to 12 months of directly related experience, preferably in marine fieldwork, fisheries operations, or conservation research
      • Marine Basic First Aid certification or Wilderness First Aid certification
      • Work in marine environments, including experience on commercial fishing vessels or other vessels at sea (e.g. following scientific protocols, collecting detailed data, keeping accurate and organized records, collaborating with stakeholders)
      • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, specifically working with Indigenous communities, fish harvesters and those with diverse backgrounds and varying levels of education
      • Strong ability to build and maintain partnerships.
      • Experience in community outreach, education, or nonprofit program delivery.
      • Ability and willingness to travel frequently within the region.
      • Valid Class 5 driver's license and ability to travel to Campbell River for field work
      • Ability to leave home setting for 5 days at a time for occasional field work
      • Ability to carry up to 40lbs safely and 80lbs with assistance
      • Proficiency with handling and processing data and digital tool platforms (e.g., MS Office Suite, R).


      Work Conditions
      • Full-time at 37.5 hours per week, typically Monday through Fridays. Overtime may be required. Including occasional evening and weekend work.
      • 3-month term with the possibility of renewal
      • Location: Comox-valley/Cambell River Region, or Vancouver Island, BC
      • The employee primarily works from a home office environment.
      • Occasional fieldwork aboard commercial fishing vessels is required, involving exposure to noisy environments, variable sea conditions, and unpredictable weather
