      Position Summary

      The Kinder Institute for Urban Research (KIUR) aims to improve lives through data, research, engagement, and action. The institute is currently expanding to build out five research centers focused on key aspects shaping the social and cultural landscape of the Houston area. The five research centers will conduct research on housing, education, public health, economic mobility and inequality, and population dynamics. KIUR uses a research-practice partnership (RPP) model to jointly design, develop, and do research that values diversity in expertise and centers the community in identifying the most pressing questions and challenges facing Houston.

      The Kinder Institute for Urban Research is seeking a full-time Data Manager to perform a variety of tasks related to the processing and maintenance of datasets, and in particular large, restricted education datasets, to facilitate research. Tasks include acquiring, cataloging, structuring, and cleaning data; creating analysis-ready datasets with documentation; publishing and maintaining versions of finalized datasets. The Data Manager will work closely with the Senior Data Manager and the institute’s various research teams.

      This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position, and the salary depending on experience starts at $76,000. Optional hybrid work schedule within Harris County and surrounding counties.

      Requirements

      • Bachelor’s Degree
        • In lieu of the education requirement, additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted
      • 2 years of related experience in data management and curating and organizing large volumes of data
      • Skills
        • General understanding of Information Security and Privacy risks and the methods to mitigate those risks
        • Proven ability to meet multiple deadlines and priorities, working on a team or independently
        • Able to work independently, plan, organize, and prioritize work
        • Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to communicate effectively with colleagues as well as non-technical users
        • Excellent verbal and written/documentation skills
        • Demonstrated ability to rapidly learn and apply new technologies, tools, techniques, and methodologies

      Preferred Requirements

      • Master’s Degree in Management Information Systems
      • Experience with Programming
      • Ability to use STATA
      • Willingness to learn other programming languages and applications
      • Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment and adaptable to change

      Essential Functions

      • SAS, R, and/or Python programming: Processes data based on analytical needs (read, verify, organize, and prepare datasets for research staff and statisticians).
      • Documents data history, processing decisions, and methods; maintains a list of analysis-ready datasets.
      • Organizes files and folders within the Windows operating system.
      • Manages access to specific datasets.
      • Imports files into the data enclave. Reviewing files for compliance before they are exported out of the data enclave.
      • User management: on-boarding/off-boarding users.
      • Audits code prepared by other programmers.
      • Builds relationships with data suppliers.
      • Assess and produce relevant, standard, or custom reports.
      • Troubleshoots system access and data access issues and escalates to IT staff when necessary.
      • Performs all other duties as assigned.

      Additional Functions

      • Installs application packages/extensions within the data enclave.
      • Assists in application/web testing.
      • Works cooperatively with other members of the Data and Research Teams.
      • Attends regular research and staff meetings.
      • Attends workshops as needed.
      • Develops and produces dashboards, key performance indicators, trends, and other recognized metrics used to monitor and report performance.
