- As a member of the Site Leadership Team (SLT), sets goals for both site and function.
- Provides direction and prioritization for the functional area managers within the F&E department. Hires and develops employees and creates succession plans. Provides feedback and coaching, and performance management.
- Monitors tactical execution of operational activities across the Engineering functional groups and for the site as a member of the SLT. Communicates to stakeholders issues and resolutions in a timely manner.
- Sets and meets customer commitments including new product introduction timelines.
- Identifies opportunities to improve robustness, reliability, and other aspects of operational performance.
- Provides Engineering expertise at site and across sites. Supports strategic business activities including long range planning, S&OP, capital investment plans, facility master plans, due diligence, and other governance processes.
- Manages operational budget and partners with key stakeholders to plan and manage capital investments.
- Represents VVS in external interactions with regulatory agencies, customers, government agencies, business partners and service providers.
- Ensures adequate training (skills-based, cGMP and Safety) of employees within department to perform or exceed job requirements.
- Creates and maintains relationships with other Thermo Fisher sites and corporate engineering team to develop and promote engineering best practices.
- Bachelor’s Degree required. Engineering degree preferred or other related technical degree
- 15+ years of related experience in the Pharmaceutical or related industry including experience in engineering, operations, program and project management.
- 5+ years of experience in a functional leadership position within one or more areas including Process Engineering, Facilities/Engineering, Maintenance, Automation, I&C, Validation or related functions
- Experience in building own team and project teams and developing team capabilities to deliver results
- Direct experience supporting manufacturing facilities and utility systems within an FDA/EMA regulated environment.
- Strong understanding of applicable regulatory requirements (FDA and EMA). Audit experienced is required.
- Fundamental knowledge of GMP equipment, utility and cleanroom design/installation and quality control laboratory design/installation...
- Strong understanding of industry standards for commissioning, validation, and operation of facilities and utilities for cGMP manufacturing and GxP laboratories.
- Experience working in an external manufacturing environment as supplier or client is preferred.
- Experience with single-use technologies is preferred.
- Experience with a GMP facility startup is preferred.
- Ability to build strong relationships and influence internal functions, leaders and customers.
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills and ability to present to customers and senior management.
- Ability to define strategies, manage complex issues, and set goals for others.
- Ability to lead a team by driving accountability, performance and engagement.
- Ability to dig into details, quickly get to the essence, and bring people together to act.
- Strong financial (P&L) and analytical business acumen with a track record of sound decision-making.

Thermo Fisher Scientific - Viral Vector Services (VVS) is a rapidly growing, dynamic gene therapy contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) that is seeking sharp individuals to bring the highest quality processes, products and testing to our clients. The role is based at the VVS Plainville, MA site. Limited travel will be required to other VVS locations in Massachusetts and Florida.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Director, Facilities & Engineering (F&E) will report to the Site Head for Plainville, the largest manufacturing facility across Thermo Fisher’s viral vector services network worldwide. The Director will be responsible for F&E operations at the site supporting GMP and non-GMP facilities, utilities, equipment, and automation used in drug substance and drug product manufacturing, quality control laboratories, pilot laboratories, and associated support areas. Construction is underway to establish these capabilities, so the initial focus of the position is startup and operational readiness. Following successful production startup, the Director is responsible for 24/7 operations of building infrastructure and systems for the Plainville site.
