- Provides single point of contact for global oncology senior stakeholders (TSO Head, RED Head, SBU Head etc.) both in research and development for M&S to ensure optimal communication, alignment, and prioritization.
- Works in collaboration with project teams and other stakeholders (such as DMPK, Computational Biology, Pharmacometrics and Clinical Pharmacology) to align on M&S strategy and to create an integrated analytical plan (including preclinical, clinical, literature, real world data).
- Build center of excellence, ensure deep scientific rigor, and operational effectiveness within translational modeling managing oncology portfolio priorities. Integrate as appropriate: mechanistic and empirical preclinical/translational PKPD, QSP including fit-for-purpose and platform models, clinical pharmacometrics including population PKPD, disease progression modeling, and model-based meta-analyses.
- Drive implementation and application of state-of-the-art approaches including PKPD, PBPK, QSP, pharmacometrics, and guide exploration and incorporation of novel approaches (e.g., AI/ML) and data sources (e.g., RWD, -omics, digital, etc.)
- Ensure intentional use of M&S in HA interactions, exploiting opportunities to use M&S to meet expectations in the evolving regulatory landscape: e.g., Project Optimus, MIDD pilot program, and other regulatory guidance.
- Build world-class reputation as leaders in oncology M&S through presentations, publications, industry-focused working group and workshop participation, …
- Collaborate with project teams to develop translational modeling strategy in oncology from research to development to increase confidence in decision making and assess drug candidate attributes against available or emerging competitive therapeutics.
- Support early discovery projects with respect to target identification and optimization along with Computational Biology group.
- In alignment with the global head of TSO Oncology ensures prioritization and resourcing of modeling and simulation needs for Oncology.
- Helps drive the TSO Oncology strategy and accountability across multiple functions ensuring alignment with overall R&D strategy.
- Responsible for the integrity and correctness of analysis, interpretation, and appropriate integration of data from discovery and development programs.
- Embraces innovation into methodologies such as quantitative systems pharmacology (QSP) and machine learning including software, methods, models, inclusion of novel data sources (real world data, literature-derived data).
- Communicates predictions to key stakeholders and serves on strategic and scientific teams and task forces, providing overall modeling expertise where required.
- Ensures appropriate software deployment and data transfer for cloud computing applications in collaboration with IT.
- Enhances Bayer’s reputation externally through scientific leadership, collaboration with academic institutions, journal publications and conference presentations.
- PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Mathematical Biology, Computational Systems Biology/ Pharmacology, or related field Required
- Long term of postgraduate experience in oncology modeling working in academia and/or pharmaceutical industry Required
- Demonstrated success in utilizing innovative modeling approaches to support drug development and regulatory submissions.
- Familiarity with standard modeling software/languages (R, Matlab, Nonmem).
- Well recognized within biomedical engineering/systems biology communities such as ISOP/BMES to facilitate recruitment of highly talented individuals within Bayer ecosystem.
- Experience managing and building modeling groups in the pharmaceutical industry.
- Strong technical proficiency and working knowledge of clinical pharmacology, pharmacometrics and imaging methodologies.
- Ability to work closely with stakeholders to manage M&S projects to support dose selection for multiple programs.
- Experience managing CROs.
- Knowledge of Health Authority perspective on clinical pharmacology, precision medicine and use of modeling and simulation.
- Ability to work in a highly matrixed environment and to prioritize and manage several projects simultaneously.
- Excellent publication record including peer-reviewed publications.

Director Translational Modeling & Simulation Lead Oncology m/f/d
Within the Translational Science Organization (TSO) Oncology, the Director of Translational M&S Oncology m/f/d will lead the efforts to ensure implementation of an overarching modeling strategy, encompassing PKPD, system biology/pharmacology, disease progression modeling, model based meta-analysis, and innovative approaches to support both drug discovery and drug development.
M&S plays a key role in designing, analyzing and integrating data to enable quantitative decision-making during drug discovery and development.
The Director Translational M&S Oncology m/f/d is responsible to provide strategic leadership for M&S activities at portfolio level from research though Life Cycle Management (LCM). The position is expected to provide mentorship and foster state of the art modeling and simulation approach using empirical and mechanistic mathematical framework and methods to support discovery and development across several modalities including – but not limited to- radiopharmaceuticals, bispecific and directed monoclonal antibodies and small molecules.
