      JOB SUMMARY

      The Fleet Safety & Training Branch is responsible for managing the City’s Fleet Safety program, including vehicle safety, driver behaviours, collision prevention, collision investigation and safe operation standards for the Corporation. The Branch is also responsible for maintaining the corporation’s Commercial Vehicle Operator Registration (CVOR) certification and ensuring ongoing compliance with all related provincial legislation.

      You are responsible for the delivery of professional, effective and high-quality driver safety training to City of Ottawa employees who drive City of Ottawa vehicles or mobile equipment as part of the Fleet Safety and Commercial Vehicle Operator Registration (CVOR) Management Program.

      You are also responsible for training drivers to properly and safely operate any City vehicle or mobile equipment, including, but not limited to, commercial vehicles, light-duty vehicles, emergency response vehicles, snow clearing equipment, other vehicles and mobile equipment. Driver Safety Trainers perform risk assessments both pre-hire and ongoing (current employees) to identify and manage risk. Driver Safety Trainers perform duties of a Signing Authority (SA) under the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) Driver Certification Program (DCP).This branch promotes the principles of driver safety throughout the organization. Additionally, Driver Safety Trainers are responsible to ensure continuous improvement of training materials and resources.

      EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

      Completion of Grade 12
      Minimum three (3) years related experience in an adult education or adult training setting.
      Five (5) years safe driving experience, including no preventable risk events, of fleet vehicles, heavy equipment, commercial vehicles, emergency response vehicles, or equivalent safe driving experience.

      CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

      Valid Ontario unrestricted “DZ” class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) with no demerit points accumulated, as per City of Ottawa corporate standard, or the ability to obtain within the trimeframe determined by the employer.
      Must demonstrate the ability to successfully obtain the following within the timeframe determined by the employer;
      • MTO Signing Authority Certification
      • Fleet Driver Trainer/Instructor Certification (PRIDE or equivalent MTO approved course)
      • ExceleRate Assessor Certification
      • Air Brake Instructor Certification
      • Motor Vehicle Collision Investigation Certification
      • Defensive Driving Course Instructor Certification
      • Mobile Crane Operator 0-8 ton P930030 Training Instructor
      • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1002 Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Qualification and National Academy for Professional Driving or Emergency Response Driving course

      KNOWLEDGE

      • Highway Traffic Act (HTA), Commercial Vehicle Operators Registration (CVOR), Ontario Health and Safety Act, and Canada Labour Code

      • Principles of adult learning

      • City of Ottawa Fleet Safety and CVOR Management Program

      • Heavy Construction Equipment, Snow and Ice Control Equipment, Grass and Turf Maintenance Equipment, Waste Collection operations, Emergency Response Vehicle operations, fleet operations

      • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers

      COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

      • Able to instruct, facilitate and motivate all levels of staff
      • Operate and demonstrate operation techniques related to most fleet vehicles
      • Facilitate learning in a classroom, on-site and on-road
      • Proficient with Office365 and use of advanced technology tools and applications
      • Strong interpersonal skills
      • Diplomacy, discretion, tact
      • Strong organizational/multi-tasking skills
      • Strong communication and writing skills
      • Ability to work in various training environments (internal and external year around)

      WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

      • Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing
      • Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.; Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted.
      • You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.
