Job Description

- Accurately and quickly checking books into the Booklist database.
- Monitoring and sorting a daily influx of digital book submissions, sending review copies to freelancer reviewers, and generally maintaining the smooth operations and workflow for Booklist’s Editorial team.
- Communicates frequently with freelancers about review deadlines and other topics, as well as with publishers about the status of their titles.
- Maintains accurate and up-to-date records of a variety of operations, including publisher and freelancer contact information, starred book reviews, and mailing schedules.
- Bachelor’s degree is preferred, ideally in English, library/information sciences, or the humanities
- Minimum 1 to 3 years related experience (may include internships and/or volunteer service)
- Exceptional communication skills – verbal and written
- Strong attention to detail
- Noted ability to stay organized in a largely virtual work environment
- Basic knowledge of book publishing and libraries a plus
- Familiarity with Google drive, Dropbox, and Excel strongly preferred.
- Must be flexible and able to handle competing, sometimes conflicting priorities
Booklist, the nation’s premier book and media review journal for public libraries, seeks a talented Editorial Assistant. This position provides administrative assistance to the Books for Youth and Graphic Novels sections of Booklist Publications.
Responsibilities include:
This is a regular full-time position based in our Chicago office.
ALA staff are currently working on a hybrid schedule. Please note that although we have a generous telecommuting policy for our employees, we do not have any truly remote positions in states outside of our workplace sites.
ALA currently requires that employees be fully vaccinated as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Proof of vaccination will be required on or before start date.
All offers of employment are contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check and proof of your eligibility to work in the United States.
Starting salary range negotiable from 40k based on relevant experience. ALA has an excellent benefit package that includes flexible work schedules, medical, dental, generous paid vacation and a retirement annuity and a 35-hour work week. You may also qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF).
