- Solve cross-functional technical issues which would not be resolved, achieving a best-for-project solution with a schedule-conscious approach.
- Provide a decisive escalation route for issues which are deadlocked and a catalyst for innovative optioneering.
- Work with the programmes and the technical teams on prioritisation and emerging scope topics, maximising the efficiency and value of delivery.
- Global risk management - Understand risks and keep up to date risk tracking.
- Specific risk management - Bring issues back under control when they start to escalate, putting in place mitigation plans and working with the technical and programme teams to bring an issue back under control.
- Advocate for pragmatic decision making which respects the overall aims of the project and ensures. This will involve producing and driving mitigation plans for risks and issues, ensuring they are delivery focused. There will also be a strong focus on optioneering and governance decisions, ensuring these are fit for purpose and made at the right level.
- Manage the provision of engineering services for HPC project, achieving suitable technical outcomes with a focus on value engineering and optimisation.
- A degree level qualification in a relevant technical discipline (i.e. engineering, science, maths).
- Broad experience in the nuclear industry including knowledge of nuclear safety cases.
- Experience across the project lifecycle which may include design, manufacture, construction/installation, commissioning and operations.
Aztec West, Bristol. Hybrid with 2-3 days in the office per week.

The Opportunity…
We are looking for technical leaders to join our nuclear energy business working within the HPC Technical Directorate. You will be at the heart of an ambitious technical design, manufacturing, construction and commissioning programme, driving technical solutions across many areas of the organisation and across multiple countries.
The Technical Directorate’s mission is to deliver a compliant, buildable and operable design on time and on budget, relying on experience feedback from the EPR family as well as global New Nuclear engineering practices.
As an Area Engineering Lead (AEL), you will report to an Area Engineering Manager and work with the Nuclear Island Design Management Team (NI-DMT). Your accountability is split between the HPC Technical Director and the Nuclear Island Area Delivery Director.
As the role is area and delivery focused, you must have the flexibility to work across diverse technical areas, including ones outside your usual area of expertise. You will be able to quickly pick up new topics and learn through doing, actively listening to the multi-disciplinary team and positioning yourself to maximise impact. You will provide clear technical and process guidance and advice on a diverse array of topics.

What you’ll be doing…
The principal responsibilities are the following:
The NI-DMT is small and agile, so you will be expected to cover a diverse topical area. To do this, you will need to build rapport quickly with wide network of stakeholders and attend an array of meetings to ensure you stay fully in touch across the project. You will take on emerging or entrenched risks and issues, establishing frameworks and small project structures with a focus on pragmatic decision making, delivering solutions and mitigation of issues/blockers. You will strive for simplification and clarity, driving the best decisions in support of the HPC project.
You may occasionally be expected to be involved in interactions with our Nuclear Regulator and a good understanding of UK Nuclear context will be key for these interactions.
Who you are…
To be successful in this role, you should have suitable & sufficient experience of equipment design, engineering, manufacture and installation to allow you to be the guiding hand to ensure decisions are made that are best-for-project. This work could encompass mechanical, electrical and Instrumentation & Control, and applications are welcomed from people with experience in any/all these fields.
