Purpose of the Position
The environmental compliance director is responsible for the analysis of impacts of BHE Renewables operations on the environment and for the implementation of appropriate environmental management systems which assist the business unit in meeting environmental goals. Assesses compliance of company operations with environmental regulations and laws. Evaluates and provides comments to management on proposed state and federal legislation and regulations. Recommends company policy and procedures on environmental matters. Prepares regulatory submittals for permits and environmental impact statements. Works as a liaison between regulatory agencies and other company departments.
Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Function)Save
Monitor compliance of environmental requirements contained in conditional use permits, biological opinions, incidental take permits, streambed alteration agreement, and all other permits required to support the construction and operational phases of the project.
Provide technical leadership and input to staff for environmental compliance and permitting, including plans and programs.
Develop a complete knowledge base and understanding of all permits and conditions associated with new and existing projects.
Perform complex environmental work requiring exercise of independent analysis and judgment. Exhibit leadership in anticipating and addressing evolving environmental issues. Manage environmental activities of outside consulting firms.
Prepare, review and submit reports required by corporate and governmental agencies. For all reports submitted on behalf of BHE Renewables, review for accuracy and details prior to submittal to governmental agencies.
Evaluate and provide comments to management on proposed state and federal laws and regulations. Advise management of the impact of proposed regulations and recommend potential compliance strategies. Proactively participate in associations and on various task forces to assist in the development of environmental laws and regulations.
Conduct investigations into all environmental incidents to determine the root cause of the incident. As part of the investigation provide regular updates and a final report with conclusions and corrective actions to be taken to management.
Maintain an understanding of processes within the various sites and assist in the continuous improvement of processes with environmental aspects through the company's environmental management system. Identify, develop and implement strategic environmental initiatives for establishing external competitive advantages.
Maintain a working knowledge of environmental issues for media responses that may be required as directed by the BHE Renewables communications group. Maintain a specialized knowledge and expertise in project issues and utilize such knowledge in day-to-day functions including permitting.
Assist with development of operational permits and environmental impact statements; represent the company during discussions with state and federal agencies on permit conditions, variances or other environmental areas.
Prepare budget forecasts and document actual performance of budgeted activities for assigned environmental services.
Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.
!*!Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering, environmental sciences or the physical sciences. (Typically, six years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.)
Eight years of related work experience, preferably three of the eight years with supervisor/management responsibilities or a technical leadership role. A broad diversity of environmental work experience in renewable/alternative energy is preferred.
An advanced knowledge of environmental laws and regulations, with the demonstrated ability to analyze complex regulations and determine applicability based on an understanding of the facility operations. Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills. Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents, such as business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, governmental regulations. Able to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, the public and employees at all levels.
Effective interpersonal skills and leadership abilities. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with business unit personnel, government agencies, trade groups and other industries.
Ability to define obscure and incomplete problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Able to conceptualize and develop creative alternatives to problem resolution. Ability to deal with abstract and concrete concepts.
Computer skills including competency with spreadsheets, databases, word processors, presentation tools or a demonstrated ability to learn such skills.
Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
Ability to work effectively with people of different backgrounds.
