      Performs assigned inspections, evaluations, and investigations related to elevated blood lead levels in children for the Public Health Regional Office.

      Obtains and maintains EPA certification as a Lead-Based Paint Risk Assessor.

      Conducts investigations and lead risk assessments in homes and other locations associated with elevated blood lead levels in children.

      Writes summary reports for environmental assessments and clearly communicate with property owners and residents.

      Updates and maintains cases in DHEC's electronic surveillance system.

      Works as an effective team member with other risk assessors, public health nurses, attorneys, and other staff as needed.

      Must be able to visually distinguish between various shades of color; conduct field tests using instruments which require steady hands; and maintain a professional personal appearance. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a good driving record. This position requires the successful completion of technical coursework and passing any test relevant to the position, including becoming certified as an EPA Lead Risk Assessor, within the probationary period or trial period. Occasional overnight travel may be required. May be required to drive personal vehicle if a state vehicle is unavailable

      State Minimum Requirements:

      Some positions require the possession of a valid driver's license. Some positions require the successful completion of specialized courses in health physics or certification as a health physicist. A high school diploma or GED and experience in environmental health programs or radiological health. A bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences, mathematics, public health, engineering or a related technical field may be substituted for the required work experience.


      Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.


      Agency Additional Requirements:

      This position requires the possession of a valid driver's license. Must have excellent organizational and communication skills, and communicate clearly and concisely in both an oral and written manner; work effectively in a team-oriented environment and independently in a field environment; work in all reasonable weather conditions; access non-traditional work environments; traverse uneven grounds, climb ladders, stoop, make visual observations of facilities, samples, plans, specifications, reports, etc.; visually differentiate between various shades of color; conduct field tests using instruments which require steady hands; and wear the required safety equipment as needed. This position requires the successful completion of prescribed technical coursework and passing any test relevant to the position, including becoming certified as an EPA Lead Risk Assessor, within the probationary period or trial period.

      Current or previous EPA certification as Lead-Based Paint Risk Assessor or experience conducting home or environmental assessments is preferred.

      Immunization: All new employees who are healthcare providers are required to provide documentation of immunity or be immunized against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, P ertussis , Varicella, and Hepatitis B prior to beginning employment.

      State Disaster Plan: In accordance with the State's Disaster Plan, which includes hazardous weather, DHEC employees may be required to work in times of an emergency or disaster.
