Let’s change the world.The R&D Strategy and Operations at Amgen is focusing on driving innovation beyond the molecule and applying strategies to simplify processes, improve success rates, accelerating pipeline progression, ultimately expediting the path to patient value and access.

      The Executive Director, R&D Performance Excellence will be primarily responsible for evolving and managing functional transformation, continuous improvement, and performance management across all R&D functions and delivering results that drive peak R&D Operational Excellence globally.

      In this vital role, the Executive Director will lead the R&D Program Management Office, which includes developing the overall R&D Performance ecosystem. including strategies to best enable operational excellence and strategic capability development. They will work in close alignment with Corporate Partners (HR, Finance, Informatics, etc.), Functional leaders, and Business Process Leads to develop an agile and robust R&D Performance Management ecosystem, with a focus on delivering R&D strategic capabilities, robust and efficient operating models, and progressing an agile, data savvy culture.

      This role will report into the Vice President of R&D Operations and Strategy.

      This Executive Director will need to be a visionary in terms of building a simplified future focused on process, digital and data innovation. They will provide leadership in maximizing the value of Amgen’s pipeline and contributing to process innovation. They will work in a fast-paced multidisciplinary environment as the competitive landscape and business strategies keep changing rapidly. This is a high-profile role, which will lead a diverse, global high-performing team that will evolve, shift to meet the needs of the business.

      Responsibilities

      This role will lead multiple teams, and cross functional network(s), to:

      • Lead the development and implementation of the R&D performance management strategy, system and tools, ensuring alignment from functional (Local) to corporate priorities

      • Lead Continuous Improvement Global Network governance and supporting Program Management Office

      • Enable confident decision-making and robust project management and governance processes

      • Enable and monitor performance to ensure delivery of R&D strategic priorities

      • Lead R&D improvement efforts, with a focus on digital innovation and simplification

      • Translate strategy into action, diagnose pain points, co-create solutions, and successfully execute the highest priority efforts to enable innovation and continuous improvement across R&D

      • Promote the understanding, development, and practice of managing process and information to support business strategies

      • Produce presentations and visualizations that are intuitive, effective, and insightful for decision makers throughout the organization

      • Develop the partnerships across Amgen to leverage learning and tools across the broader scientific and business community. Develop new tools for use in answering questions with innovation, value generation and competitive edge as key differentiators.

      • Create prototypes, predictive models, and demonstrations to help articulate the value of insights for advancing the science and business

      This position is currently located in our corporate headquarters, located in Thousand Oaks, CA, but alternative locations will be considered for the right candidate.

      Basic Qualifications

      • Doctorate degree & 6 years of directly related industry experience OR

      • Master’s degree & 10 years of directly related industry experience OR

      • Bachelor’s degree & 12 years of directly related industry experience AND

      • 6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, systems-based innovations, programs

      Preferred Qualifications

      • Master’s degree or equivalent in life science or related discipline

      • Seven (7) or more years’ experience in systems-based Transformation, Program and/or Portfolio management in a pharmaceutical industry

      • Executive presence by which one can quickly establish credibility with and influence VP/SVP/EVP level staff

      • Leadership experience in building and developing high performing teams, delivering results, and shaping the future

      • Deep understanding of R&D, drug development, and commercialization process

      • Operations experience within a biotech, pharmaceutical or CRO company

      • Toolsets/skills required to drive organizational change

      • Finance and budget management experience

      • Business process and systems management

      • Expert integrator across people, process, and systems

      • Knowledge of SOPs, good clinical practices, and regulatory requirements

      • Strong understanding of principals of customer service as it applies to internal customers and external partners

      • Strong understanding and experience in the use of performance management techniques, measures, problem solving and analytical thinking

      • Advanced skills in application software and analytical development methodologies

      • Project planning and management

      • Strong data science, data analysis or data management with familiarity of big data, analytics and data mining environments

      • A good understanding of R&D data, deliverables, and business processes

      • Possesses an understanding of business functions and interrelationships between data stores needed to transform data into meaningful intelligence using business intelligence tools

      • Exposure to or evidence of expertise in analytic methods and tools related to R&D, particularly around the use of data, and knowledge of related investigative and regulatory submission challenges

      • Quantitative & qualitative data analysis including continuous data improvement.

      • Strong experience in metrics, reporting, dash-boarding and analytics technologies.

      The annual base salary range for this opportunity in the U.S. is $242,128 - $286,766.
