      EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, EXTERNAL ENGAGEMENT

      Victoria

      The Opportunity

      With new public affairs leadership, the position of Executive Director, External Engagement, is a senior leadership role in the organization and one that will have broad influence to grow and evolve BC Ferries’ external engagement strategy.

      As an Executive Director, External Engagement, you are responsible for the oversight of corporate strategic engagement with a mandate to build and maintain effective relationships with external interest holders including First Nations, communities, stakeholders, and all levels of government. You are an authentic leader, able to build connections internally and externally, and establish and nurture relationships in a complex, evolving environment. You contribute to the achievement of the company's business objectives in the areas of engaging public stakeholders, building awareness, explaining, influencing, and advancing the company's policies and interests, positioning and managing interests, effectively planning, developing and directing external engagement, community relations and investment programs.

      Reporting to the VP, Public Affairs & Marketing, you add value and are energized by key areas of oversight such as:

      • Leading and directing an effective external engagement strategy and framework that advances relationships with broad range of interest holders including Indigenous partners, all levels of government, communities and stakeholders in order to achieve company objectives
      • Planning, developing and implementing effective engagement strategies and plans linked to the company's vision, purpose, and values
      • Working closely with the communications and branding teams to effectively communicate with interest holders within the context of the company communications strategy
      • Providing organizational thought leadership and strategic advice on Indigenous relations, government relations, community and external engagement initiatives that drive change and deliver impact
      • Leading and directing cross-functional teams, as well as consultants, on internal and external engagement initiatives to deliver strategic, performance-based results
      • Overseeing stakeholder engagement efforts including relationship with the business community, associations, and relevant external agencies, including membership and corporate sponsorship programs
      • Managing Indigenous relations efforts including company’s strategy, relationship protocols, and agreements within a complex and evolving legal and policy environment.
      • Overseeing development of policies and programs to advance core areas of the strategy including effective relationship building, internal awareness and cultural awareness and recognition
      • Overseeing the company’s government relations efforts for all levels of government municipal, regional, provincial and federal including with political representatives. As well as appropriate governance and processes to ensure effective communication with government entities including standards for briefings and development and approval of documents

      What you bring to the team

      • Bachelor’s degree in communications, political science, journalism, public affairs, community engagement or other related field
      • 10+ years of experience in community engagement, communications and strategy
      • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
      • Excellent written and verbal communicator
      • Strong project management, organizational and time management skills
      • Strong interpersonal and writing skills
      • Strong presentation & training skills
      • Excellent composure, excellent verbal presentation and interpersonal skills and excellent written, listening, and oral communications skills

      Additional information

      The target salary range: $197,600 - $247,000 per annum. The starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate’s knowledge, experience and internal equity. Starting salary may exceed the target range on exceptional basis.
