      The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago oversees the Seventh District of the Federal Reserve System. The district includes most or all of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin. The mission of the Chicago Fed is to serve the public by fostering a healthy, stable and inclusive economy and financial system where all have the opportunity to thrive.

      The Executive Vice-President (EVP) for External Affairs and Civic Engagement will provide strategic direction, operational performance, and leadership in multiple areas: public affairs; external communication; engagement with corporate, nonprofit, community & governmental constituents; and community development. The EVP will design a vision and strategy across these areas that advances the Bank’s mission and its impact in the Seventh District.

      The EVP will lead the team working to broaden engagement with the public and to enhance awareness of the Chicago Fed and its mission in the district and nationally. This will include pursuing a comprehensive engagement strategy using the work of the entire Bank to create durable relationships with business, community, economic development, and government leaders; exploring partnerships with other institutions that can forward the Chicago Fed’s mission; helping oversee an external education and communication strategy for the Chicago Fed; and working collaboratively with other leaders in the Bank.

      This position will report directly to the President of the Bank. The EVP will also be a member of the Bank’s Executive Committee (EC) and will work with EC peers to advance an inclusive culture and provide strategic direction and oversight of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. The EVP will manage a team with multiple officer-level direct reports.

      Key Responsibilities

      Communications and Public Affairs

      • Help design and implement an external education and communication strategy focused on innovative and modern approaches to communications to enhance the Bank’s reputation and public awareness of its role in the economy.
      • Manage and expand relationships with media outlets and industry analysts, as well as corporate, nonprofit, and government leaders, to increase the Bank’s impact and public awareness of its mission.
      • Oversee the development and execution of the organization’s social media strategy in collaboration with internal business partners to drive and measure organizational objectives and outcomes.
      • Provide strategic counsel to the President and EC as a trusted advisor on external affairs and communications.

      Strategic Planning

      • Identify important economic, financial and community development priorities in keeping with the Bank’s mission.
      • Involve expertise throughout the Bank to create strategies, partnerships and events that can leverage the Chicago Fed’s role as a catalyst and convener.
      • Lead a broad and inclusive process to create a vision and strategy for how the Bank will combine insights from research and community engagement to increase opportunity and improve economic outcomes for low- and moderate-income people and communities in the Seventh District.

      Partnerships and Engagement

      • Coordinate the Chicago Fed’s efforts to form strategic partnerships to advance its priorities.
      • Oversee and organize public events and conferences—either at the Bank, virtual or on-location—that help forward the Chicago Fed’s mission.
      • Participate in public events in the 7th District and represent the Chicago Fed at civic engagements with or without the President.

      Effective Management and Collaborative Leadership

      • Motivate and lead a diverse team of professionals across multiple areas.
      • Work collaboratively with leaders of other parts of the Bank.

      Your Background

      • At least 12 years of external affairs, community, or corporate engagement, government relations, community development, and/or external communications experience working at a senior level with experience managing the development and implementation of integrated plans for complex organizations.
      • Deep understanding of the key trends in civic engagement including public relations, stakeholder engagement and communications fields (political affairs, media relations, external communications, and social media).
      • Exceptional listening and communication skills, including the ability to influence and earn buy-in from diverse internal and external stakeholders on new strategic initiatives.
      • Experience counseling senior executives at the highest level and proven ability to become a trusted advisor.
      • Proven success in strategic thinking, development and execution of strategic goals, and organizing and managing diverse multi-disciplinary teams to accomplish objectives.
      • Experience collaborating with or forming partnerships with a diverse range of public and private organizations to create and deliver community development strategies.
      • An entrepreneurial mindset will be important for identifying important subjects and working closely with the Research department or other internal experts.
      • Experience successfully using insights from the research literature to develop policy and/or implement solutions to community development challenges is preferred.
      • Familiarity with business, economics, or finance/banking preferred.
      • Experience with corporate and civic leaders in the district and/or pertinent issues facing the region preferred.

      Additional Requirements

      • This position requires access to confidential supervisory information and/or FOMC information, which is limited to "Protected Individuals" as defined in the U.S. federal immigration law. Protected Individuals include, but are not limited to, U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and U.S. permanent residents who either are not yet eligible to apply for naturalization or who have applied for naturalization within the requisite timeframe.
