- Assists in performing routine ferryboat maintenance and repair work including, but not limited to, refueling, changing oil, lubricating parts and machinery, replacing batteries, changing cables and cleaning and pumping out bilges.
- Participates in periodic all hands drills and emergency exercises
- Serves as secondary enforcement authority for state regulations governing operation of the ferries.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Performs major repair or overhaul of machinery, equipment and/or systems, including but not limited to diesel engines, generators, electric motors, pumps, compressors, starters, clutches and bearings.
- Performs periodic preventative maintenance checks and adjustments of machinery, equipment and/or systems; as required moves items related to these activities.
- Performs routine ferryboat maintenance and repair work including, but not limited to, refueling, changing oil, lubricating parts and machinery, replacing batteries, changing cables and cleaning and pumping out bilges

- Coordinates required American Bureau of Shipping and U.S. Coast Guard inspections, dock and sea trials and inspects shipyard work and/or vessel machinery, equipment and systems.
- May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
- Assists with daily log of watch activities, operating machinery and equipment statistics.
- Ensures strict compliance with the Federal Waters Pollution Control Act.
- Participates in periodic all hands drills and emergency exercises.

- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have required US Coast Guard (USCG) certifications an/or documents appropriate for the position and vessel being operated.
- For Galveston Ferry Operations: Must have or obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) at time of application.
- USCG-Mer Mar Doc-Ord Seaman/Wi at time of application.

TxDOT Galveston-Bolivar Ferry is a 24/7, 365 days inland maritime operation based out of Galveston, Texas. We safely transport vehicles and passengers on a 3-mile route between Galveston and Port Bolivar, Texas. Our fleet consists of state of the art and modern-day ferries which are propelled by either Voith-Schneider Propulsion or single propeller systems.
