      General Engineering Tech II (A20): $48,158 - $77,477

      General Engineering Tech I:

      Performs and coordinates advanced transportation engineering operations or maintenance support work such as construction and/or complex maintenance contract inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. May serve as a lead worker. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

      General Engineering Tech II:

      Performs and coordinates highly advanced transportation engineering operations or maintenance support work such as construction
      and/or complex contract maintenance inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; traffic control; helping
      the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. May serve as a lead worker. Employees at this level
      establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled
      at the occurrence.

      Essential Duties for General Engineering Tech I or II:

      • May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
      • Oversees complex maintenance and spot improvement contracts.
      • Performs detail design and quantity checks for plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E).
      • Performs pavement evaluations and operates data collection equipment.
      • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

      Additional Essential Duties for General Engineering Tech II:

      • Consults with contractors' superintendent on work progress and maintenance problems; reviews equipment utilization data
        and time/cost estimates.
      • Oversees complex maintenance and spot improvement contracts and total maintenance, performance based, and/or bundled bid
        contracts.
      • Serves as project leader responsible for construction inspection activities for large and/or complex construction
        projects or for multiple district construction projects.
      • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during
        emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
      • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

      Minimum Qualifications:

      General Engineering Tech I:

      Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

      Experience: 4 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent).

      General Engineering Tech II:

      Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies

      Experience: 6 YEARS in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience
      (Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent)

      Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications


      Licenses and Certifications:

      • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
      • Mandatory: Safety Impact Certificate
      • Mandatory: Commercial Driver Certificate
      • Mandatory: Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License or have obtained a CDL "A” License with Class "N" endorsement, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.


      Competencies for General Engineering Tech I or II:

      • Transportation principles and methods for moving people or goods by multimodal (road, air, water) methods, including
        their relative costs, advantages and limitations
      • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
      • Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility to meet short and long term deadlines
      • Maintaining a safe working relationship
      • Monitoring contracts and procedures

      Additional Competencies for General Engineering Tech II:

      • Applicable testing methods, processes and procedures
      • Applicable testing methods, processes and procedures
      • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others

      • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
