      We are seeking to recruit GP Assistants to join our Primary Care Network in Portsmouth. One position will require you to hold a Full UK driving licence and have the availability of a car. Please indicate on your application form if you do not possess a valid Full UK Driving Linence.

      Main duties of the job

      The role of GP Assistant (GPA) will support the GP and wider clinical teams by carrying out routine administrative tasks and basic clinical duties on behalf of the GP. This will enable GP's to utilise their own time more effectively towards greater patient focused activities.

      About us

      The Brunel Primary Care Network consists of three Practices across Portsmouth; East Shore Partnership. The Lighthouse Group and University Surgery.

      We have highly skilled and motivated teams working across our PCN, which consist of GP Partners, Salaried GP's, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Pharmacists, Diabetes and Respiratory Nurse Specialists, Nurses and HCA's; who are supported by skilled administration teams.

      Job description

      Job responsibilities

      Duties consist of:

      • Sorting all clinical post and prioritising for the GP in terms of actions. Signposting some post to others such as clinical pharmacist etc.
      • Dealing with routine clinical post directly e.g. DNA letters
      • Extracting all information from clinical letters that needs coding and adding to notes
      • Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow up appointments of patients
      • Preparing patients prior to going in to see the GP, taking a brief history, observations and basic readings in readiness for the GP appointment.
      • Dipping urine, taking blood pressure, ECGs & phlebotomy
      • Completing basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign such as insurance forms, mortgage, ESA113 benefits agency forms etc
      • Explaining treatment procedures to patients
      • Helping the GP liaise with outside agencies e.g. getting an on call doctor on the phone to ask advice or arrange admission while the GP can continue with their consultation(s)
      • Support the GP with immunisations/wound care
      • Extracting information from clinical letters that requires coding.

      Arranging patient appointments, referrals and follow up appointments

      Essential

      • Experience of working in a clinical or healthcare environment
      • Experience of working with clinical system, data base or patient records system.
      • Experience of working with the general public

      Desirable

      • Experience using SystmOne clinical system
      • Experience of data entry and coding.
      • Sound knowledge of medical terminology
      • Experience in common examination procedures, BP, pulse, peak flow, UTI tests and ECG

      Qualifications

      Essential

      • Educated to GCSE level or equivalent in Maths & English, grade C or above

      Desirable

      • GP Assistant Certificate qualification/willingness to undertake a GPA training Course.
      • Qualified in Phlebotomy, ECG, Patient Health Checks, Blood Pressure Measuring.
      • Basic First Aid knowledge

      Knowledge and Skills

      Essential

      • Ability to record accurate clinical notes
      • Ability to work within own scope of practice and understanding when to seek support
      • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
      • Excellent attention to detail
      • Strong IT skills - competent in the use of Microsoft Office and Outlook
