      Job summary

      General Practice Assistants (GPAs) form part of a multi-disciplinary team within primary care and support the clinicians in the smooth running of the surgery by handling routine administration and some basic clinical duties enabling the clinician to focus on the patient. Ultimately the aim is to improve the patients access/experience in practice.

      Main duties of the job

      Our GPAs will provide administrative and some clinical support to our surgery staff, enabling them to make the best use of consultation time, as part of a multi-disciplinary, primary-care team, contributing to the smooth running of our GP Practices.

      Job description

      Job responsibilities

      The General Practice Assistant role forms part of a multi-disciplinary team within primary care, providing a support role by carrying out administrative tasks which help to free GPs time and contributes to the smooth running of the surgery.

      The following are the core responsibilities of the GP Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks. This will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

      To be the main contact for the private work team to ensure this work is carried out in a timely manner.

      Complete core elements of basic non-opinion forms for the GP to finalise, approve and sign.

      Undertake initial assessment of patients who require a private medical and assist GPs with clinics such as minor operations and coil fits.

      Be responsible for completing factual information on cremation forms. Liaise with funeral directors as required.

      Complete referrals to One Call and District Nursing teams.

      Complete referral proformas such as: HOCF, Wheelchair referral service, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome service, Gender Identity service, Single Point of Access, Eating Disorders service. Ensure that these are completed on EMIS and that the Medical Secretaries are notified once completed

      Be responsible for triaging urgent tasks in EMIS task inbox and applying Out of Office when a GP is absent at their site.

      Stock and maintain clinical rooms.

      Generate blood test requests if required by healthcare professionals.

      Be responsible for filing normal blood test results on a rota basis.

      Carers liaison

      Undertake phlebotomy services when required for the housebound patients.

      Develop a role in providing a service to housebound patient requiring blood tests, diabetic foot checks, blood pressure monitoring once training is completed.

      Assist GPs who are undertaking minor ops procedures once trained in antiseptic non-touch technique.
