      About Mathematica:

Mathematica applies expertise at the intersection of data, methods, policy, and practice to improve well-being around the world. We collaborate closely with public- and private-sector partners to translate big questions into deep insights that improve interventions, refine strategies, and enhance understanding. Our work yields actionable information to guide decisions in wide-ranging policy areas, from health, education, early childhood, and family support to nutrition, employment, disability, and international development. As a fully employee-owned firm, Mathematica is dedicated to defining and advancing our mission to improve public well-being by bringing the highest standards of quality, objectivity, and excellence in information collection and analysis for our clients. At Mathematica, we take pride in our commitment to diversity. Building an inclusive culture that draws on the individual strengths of employees from different ethnic backgrounds, cultures, lifestyles, abilities, and experiences is key to our success.

As a trusted partner to federal, state, and local health agencies, Mathematica is expanding our offerings in Commercial Health Care and Life Sciences. Leveraging our mission- and data-driven approach, proven in shaping Medicare and Medicaid policies, we now provide advanced analytic and advisory capabilities to private providers, health systems, life sciences, med tech firms, risk-bearing entities, and medical colleges and societies.

      Position Overview:

We are offering a dynamic internship opportunity for PhD graduate students in Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR), or Pharmacy/Health Economics programs with an HEOR, real-world evidence, (RWE), pharmacoepidemiology, or pharmacovigilance focus. The interns can expect to support data processing and analysis tasks, such as building analytic files, developing documentation, and applying epidemiological, economic, and statistical methods. This is a paid, full-time, 10-week internship, from June 3, 2024 until August 9, 2024. This will be a remote internship. However, it may be possible for the intern to work in the Washington, D.C. office.

During the internship, interns will work on a dedicated project, tailored to match their interests and experience as well as Mathematica’s current research needs. We welcome, but do not require, interns to propose their own research ideas for a project. Interns will be paired with a mentor, who will provide support on the intern’s project and help the intern gain insight into Mathematica’s Life Sciences and health policy work. The internship may include exposure to internal research projects, client-based work, and may intersect with data science offerings and needs.

We provide interested interns an opportunity to leverage our data assets, including:

      • 100% Medicare and Medicaid claims from CMS and
      • Mathematica’s Price Transparency Database (based on pricing data disclosed by health plans).

Interns will have access to Mathematica’s diverse, multi-disciplinary staff for informational sessions, career advice, and will meet with our CEO during their internship. Further, interns will have access to seminars and knowledge sharing in all areas of our work. After the internship, the interns may have an opportunity to continue to work at Mathematica part time and are encouraged apply for a full-time position.
