  Position Summary
  
  

  Under the general supervision of the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), ensure that UCLA's Radiation Safety Program is carried out throughout the UCLA campus and the Medical Center in accordance with the Radiation Protection Manual, State and Federal regulations. Develop and serve as lead person for one or more of the following programs: instrument calibration, internal and external dosimetry, training, radiation surveillance, radioactive waste, radioactive shipment/inventory, machine registrations, standard operating procedure drafting, review and implementation, Nuclear Medicine audits, radiation oncology audits and security measures. Perform special assignments as directed by the RSO, or their designee. Participate in department emergency response efforts. The incumbent is expected to perform the following core functions: program development, process improvements, technical assessment of radiation use authorizations, QA review and implementation, SOP development and revisions, and implementation of the radiation protection policies and procedures as it pertains to their assignments. Incumbent will be expected to work independently and exercise judgment in prioritizing assignments with overall direction from the manager.

  Qualifications
  
  

  2 years of professional experience in a radiation protection program Or

  5 years of professional* experience in a radiation protection program Or

  equivalent combination of training and experience as determined by the Radiation Safety Officer.

  Bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific or engineering field and two years of professional experience in a radiation protection program, or Bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific or engineering field and five years of radiation safety technician experience, or Master's degree in health/medical physics, or Equivalent combination of training and experience as determined by the Radiation Safety Officer. (Required)

  Advanced knowledge of computer database systems, applications of radioisotopes in molecular biology, radiation detection and measurement, shielding, effluent monitoring, and applicable State and Federal regulations. (Required)

  Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues, staff members, researchers, and other members of academia. (Required)

  Ability to give effective oral presentations. (Required)

  Thorough writing skills sufficient to prepare clear, concise, logical, and grammatically correct technical reports, analysis, correspondence, etc. for management, faculty, staff and regulatory agencies. (Required)

  Ability to analyze complex technical data using logic and quantitative reasoning independently. (Required)

  Skill in exchanging ideas, information, and opinions with others to formulate policies and programs and/or arrive jointly at decisions, conclusions, or solutions. Skill in working as part of a team; collaborating with colleagues. (Required)
