      The role
      As a Health Physicist, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You will further develop your diverse range of skills to help us support the delivery of nationally significant projects and ensure we continue to maintain our high standards of radiation protection into the future, for both our existing and new nuclear facilities.

      Day to day, your Health Physicist responsibilities may include:

      • Provision of environmental radiation protection and health physics technical advice to the Engineering Services Directorate and wider business
      • Development and implementation of relevant documentation, such as Best Available Techniques (BAT) assessments, Radiological Consequence Assessments, Integrated Waste Strategies (IWS) and Radiological Safety Assessments (RSAs)
      • Ensuring compliance with statutory regulations, such as the Ionising Radiations Regulations (IRR), Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR) and Radiation (Emergency Preparedness and Public Information) Regulations (REPPIR)
      • Generation and maintenance of Radioactive Waste Assessments including radioactive material transport and containment assessments
      • Problem solving and generating solutions in response to emergent radiation protection issues
      • Supporting the planning and design for future facilities / operations
      • Provision of leadership and training to more junior Health Physicists in the team (dependant on experience)

      Experience of the Health Physicist:

Provided you can demonstrate a willingness to learn and improve your skills and knowledge then we would like to hear from you. We will consider applicants from a range of backgrounds, including those who are new to the industry, however the following would be beneficial:

      • Excellent technical / scientific writing skills, including the ability to communicate key technical information at all levels
      • High levels of numeracy and IT proficiency; the interpretation of data and the development / manipulation of spreadsheets
      • Applied understanding of nuclear and radiological safety
      • Experience of radiation / environmental protection modelling tools / software
      • Knowledge of (or show a clear capability to learn) statutory legislation relevant to the UK Nuclear Industry, along with Site Licence conditions, Safety Case Management and Emergency Plan arrangements
      • Ability to work collaboratively with key stakeholders / customers across the business

      Qualifications for the Health Physicist:

      • Relevant HNC or Bachelor’s (Honours) degree (or equivalent) in Science, Maths or Engineering related discipline or significant established experience within a similar role (i.e. Radiation Protection / Nuclear Safety)
      • Membership of a professional society (e.g. Society for Radiological Protection, SRP, Chartered Radiation Protection Professional (CRadP) or similar professional registration, or willingness to work towards this


      The successful candidate(s) will be a sole UK national who is able to satisfy Ministry of Defence security requirements (this may include obtaining ‘Security Check’ (SC) and ‘Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program Information’ (NNPPI) level of security clearances).
