What to Expect (Job Responsibilities):
- Accurately code inpatient conditions and procedures using ICD guidelines and UHDDS
- Assign appropriate MS-DRG or APR-DRG for complex inpatient services
- Collaborate with Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists to address documentation concerns
- Prepare responses to DRG validation requests and inquiries from third-party payers
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA security standards while utilizing hospital information systems
What is Required (Qualifications):
- Minimum Required: Medical Coding Diploma or AHIMA-approved Health Information Management Degree
- Minimum Required: Three years of progressive inpatient coding experience in an acute care facility
- Active certification as CCS, RHIT, or RHIA required at the time of hire
- Advanced knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and surgical procedures
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
How to Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications):
- Experience with electronic health record systems
- Academic or level I or II trauma coding experience
- Familiarity with Coding Clinic and official coding guidelines
- Technical skills to navigate various software systems and troubleshoot issues
- Knowledge of accepted medical abbreviations and meanings
