Main duties of the job
Working with the Head of Clinical Services you will provide professional leadership and line management to the In-patient unit nursing team. You will have 24-hour responsibility for the provision of specialist palliative nursing services to meet the individual needs of patients on the Inpatient Unit. You'll ensure timely, responsive, and high-quality service is maintained and well organised for patients, their families, and visitors to the hospice. You'll be accountable for the overall management of the nursing team, recruitment, deployment, and supervision of staff ensuring the co-ordination of all services provided to the patients. Key Responsibilities 1.To provide clinical leadership and management support to the Inpatient Unit (IPU) team, ensuring that the highest standards of holistic nursing care are provided through supervision and operational management of the unit. 2.Develop and implement a model of nursing care which ensures each patient has an individual care plan which includes assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care. 3.Work with the multi-disciplinary team to provide a high standard of specialist palliative care to patients and their carers within the hospice. 4.To be part of the clinical on call rota. 5.To participate in multi-disciplinary meetings. 6.To attend clinical meetings relevant to role as required. 7.Act as a specialist resource for patients, carers, and non-specialist groups of staff. 8.Maintain accurate, up-to-date staff and patient records. 9.To maintain specialist expertise underpinned by theory and to maintain clinical contact so to act as a role model to nursing staff. 10.Oversee the line management for IPS staff, conducting and ensuring effective and timely performance management (including competence) of individual staff members in line with the hospice's policy 11.Investigate and provide reports (with conclusions/recommendations) following incidents and complaints 12.Maintain effective clear communication systems to keep staff informed and facilitate and encourage two-way communication 13.Be an effective change agent Clinical Governance 1.Play a key role in DMH clinical governance programme, participating in and supporting research and audit both within the Hospice, regionally and nationally. 2.Develop clinical protocols to facilitate practice developments, benchmarking where possible, to ensure that staff adhere to best evidence-based practice and makes optimum use of resources to achieve the highest standards of care and service. 3.Maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, staff, and volunteers, ensuring that staff and volunteers are aware of their responsibility in relation to health and safety, and cleanliness. 4.Investigate all accidents, untoward incidents and complaints and ensure that appropriate action is taken in accordance with agreed policies and procedures. 5.Take an active role in quality assurance initiatives, including the setting and auditing of standards and implementing resulting action plans. 6.Organise learning and development resources using agreed methods and frameworks. 7.Collect and collate data and keep knowledge and information systems up to date using set procedures. 8.Be aware of organisational strategic direction and future issues pertaining to the provision of specialist palliative care and supportive care. 9.To ensure adherence to hospice and professional policies and procedures.
