- Handles a caseload which includes primarily general liability litigated disputes, which includes cases involving slip/trip and fall incidents, automobile accidents, and property damage disputes, among other matters.
- Independently conducts trials, depositions, pre-trial discovery, mediations, arbitrations or any other legal activity required to resolve cases.
- Daily communications with claim professionals concerning the status and evaluations of legal files.
- Provides legal advice and recommendations to insureds and claim professionals.
- Negotiates settlements directly with claimants, opposing counsel, and mediators.
- Maintain paperless files.
- Must be licensed to practice law in the state courts in California.
- Must have a minimum of 5+ years’ experience in handling litigated personal injury/property damage disputes. Defense litigation experience preferred.
- Trial experience desired.
- Must have a strong knowledge of current procedural and substantive law, as well as court rules
- Must demonstrate an ability to analyze issues, pro-actively develop effective strategies on pending cases, communicate regularly with claims professionals, document communications, and resolve cases as efficiently and effectively as possible.
- Must have solid experience in preparing responsive pleadings, handling appearances, motion practice, valuation of claims, settlement and trials.
- Must be willing to work independently with minimal direction, handle cases efficiently, and be willing to travel as necessary. This position may require travel to courts around the state of California, though remote/virtual appearances are encouraged where permitted.

Our Staff Counsel legal team is seeking a dynamic, collaborative and experienced Attorney to join us. This role is based in our Glendale, CA office, however the employee may work in office, hybrid, or remote.
Position Overview:
As a member of our California Staff Counsel group, this attorney will be primarily responsible for handling the defense of Hanover insureds in connection with personal injury and property damage matters. This attorney will be responsible for responding to lawsuits which have been filed against Hanover’s insureds and handling every aspect of the litigation process from inception through conclusion via settlement, dismissal and/or trial. The attorney will be working with adjusters and insureds to resolve claims as expeditiously and efficiently as possible. This attorney may also be called upon to assist with miscellaneous professional liability matters as needed, and thus, experience in this area is desirable. This role is based in our Glendale, CA office, however the employee may work in office, hybrid, or remote.

The target hiring range for this role may vary based on geographic location and other factors, including merit or performance, demonstrated proficiency, skills for the role, education, travel requirements, and experience. Additional compensation may include an annual bonus (which could take the form of a general bonus, sales incentive, or short-term incentive), long-term incentive or spot recognition awards. The posted range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
