The Department of Psychology is the largest department at Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka (the University of Otago) in terms of student numbers and has a large cohort of tauira Māori. Our award-winning teaching staff are passionate and innovative. We have a diverse student body and are strongly committed to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi), the University’s Māori Strategic Framework and Pacific Strategic Framework, and to equity.

Te mahi/The role

In this permanent role, you will support the success of tauira Māori (Māori undergraduate and postgraduate students) in the Department of Psychology. This specific role is focused on increasing tauira Māori success by organising and evaluating targeted learning support and events for relevant students, in coordination with academic colleagues, and by facilitating cultural understanding within the Department.

Key tasks of this role include:
• Facilitating learning for tauira Māori through engagement, referral to academic and student support services, and providing assistance relating to teaching and learning.
• Assisting with relevant teaching activities, including leading whānau laboratory classes and statistics tutorials.
• Assisting with Departmental activities and events to support tauira Māori engagement, experience, and academic success, including weekly kawhe catch-ups with tauira and staff.
• Supporting, communicating, and following up with tauira Māori who may be struggling academically.
• Carrying out administrative processes, compliance and reporting related to student engagement with academic material.
• Undertaking any relevant health and safety training to ensure sound health and safety practices are carried out.

Successful candidates will have:
• Aptitude for effective tutoring at tertiary level.
• Ability to work well with tauira Māori and staff at all levels of the University.
• Commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi), the University’s Māori Strategic Framework and Pacific Strategic Framework, and to equity.
• Demonstrated knowledge of te ao Māori and its role in fostering student success at the University.
• Ability to develop creative solutions to engage tauira Māori in their learning of psychology.
• An undergraduate degree, with a BA or BSc in Psychology preferred.
• Keen interest in psychology, statistics, or related areas.
• Strong organisational skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft software programmes and competence in technology.
• Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and independently.
• Ability to maintain a professional approach with both staff and students while under pressure.

A familiarity with curriculum and programme delivery in the Department of Psychology and student support functions in the Department and the University is preferred. As is:
• Having established links and networks with Māori communities.
• Holding, or be studying towards, a higher degree or tertiary teaching qualification.
• Being flexible to work outside normal hours, if required.

Pūroko/Further details

This is a full-time (0.8-1.0 FTE negotiable), permanent position located in Dunedin.

The salary range for this position is $70,692 to $82,008 (Band one) or $85,523 to $96,058 (band two) per annum.
