        Job Description

        The main responsibilities for Laboratory Aide in Microbiology are the registering of patient specimens onto the Laboratory Information Management Systems, ensuring demographics on the forms match the specimens. Identification & resolving specimen queries. Liaise with Microbiology staff to streamline specimen reception, booking in and processing.

        Specific Tasks

        • Use of Laboratory Information Management Systems in place in the laboratory.
        • Help achieve departmental goals & objectives.
        • Be aware and be compliant with all documentation related to your department to include - Training records, SOP’s, Forms.
        • To ensure all specimens are received/ checked for appropriateness & accuracy as detailed in relevant SOP’s.
        • Check deliveries for URGENT samples for prioritisation.
        • Register samples using Laboratory Information Management Systems.
        • Ensure demographics on form match the sample.
        • Manage discrepancies/queries through the Chief Medical Scientist, Senior Medical Scientists, Laboratory Services Manager, Medical Director or Client Services as required.
        • Stock acceptance & photocopying of delivery notes.
        • Scan request forms & send to Pre Analytics Department for filing.
        • Demonstrate good laboratory practice and carry out tasks in accordance with the relevant ISO standard.
        • Assist in completion of daily work.
        • Clean & disinfect work areas daily

        Qualifications

        Education

        • Leaving Certificate or equivalent but science related diploma desirable but not essential

        Experience

        • Ideally 1 year in a similar role, but not mandatory (can be trained in-house)

        Skills and Abilities

        • Candidates must have the personal competence and capacity to properly discharge the duties of the role
