      Under the clinical direction of the Physician Lab Director, the Medical Technologist, and the Director of Nursing Services the Medical Assistant in the Laboratory obtains and processes specimens. The Medical Assistant is responsible for documenting all activities, monitoring supplies, and maintaining compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements related to safety and lab testing.


      Reports to:

      Direct & Administrative: Clinic Administrator or designee
      Technical/Clinical: Physician Lab Director / Medical Technologist / Director of Nursing Services


      Qualifications:

      1. High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) Certificate is preferred.

      2. Completion of a secondary or postsecondary Medical Assistant education program from a public school authorized by the Department of Education, or an approved Medical Assistant program at a postsecondary institution accredited or approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education.

      3. Three years as a medical assistant with experience in the laboratory OR Certified Phlebotomy Technician Certificate I (CPT I), issued by the State of California, Department of Public Health Services, Laboratory Field Services Branch.

      4. Must maintain a current Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation certification, in compliance with corporate CPR Policy.

      5. Must be deemed competent to perform Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Waived point-of-care testing by completing the Lab Competency Tool Part 1 and Written Exam Part 1 within 90 days of employment.

      6. Must be deemed competent to perform venipuncture and collect/process specimens to be sent out to reference laboratories using the Lab Skills Competency Tool Part 2 within 90 days of employment.

      7. Demonstrate skills in the performance of specimen receiving, centrifuging, labeling, logging, sorting and racking.

      8. Displays proficiency with the electronic health record database within three months of attending training session(s).

      9. Should possess the ability to effectively attend to patients of various age groups, including infants, adults, and individuals with disabilities.

      10. Fluency in English (speaks, read and write).

      11. Fluency in Spanish (speaks, translate, read and write) and will be required to complete the mandatory Medical Interpretation course offered at NEVHC.

      12. Ability to maintain absolute confidentiality about health care and other patient/client information.

      13. Must maintain a professional demeanor at all times.

      14. Current California driver’s license, appropriate insurance coverage and a driving record acceptable to the NEVHC’s insurance carrier (if required to drive on the job).
