      About Our Job

      About Our Job

Denver Public Library (DPL) is a growing urban library system that serves the residents of the City & County of Denver. DPL sees more than 4 million visitors every year across its 27 locations, serves Denver’s most vulnerable communities through outreach and mobile services, hosts thousands of programs a year, and manages a collection of more than 1.4 million physical and digital materials. We believe a strong library is vital for a strong community. DPL is committed to serving the evolving needs of Denverites through inspired programming, diverse collections, culturally-representative spaces, and equitable policies & procedures.

The Special Collections and Archives (SCA) unit at Denver Public Library comprises two archival repositories: Western History and Genealogy at the Central Library and the African American Research Library at Blair-Caldwell Library. SCA functions in many ways as a smaller version of the library, providing access to specialized materials through intentional acquisition, description, and customer service.

      About the position:

DPL is hiring a cataloging assistant to complete a variety of tasks that support departmental work and access to collections. Chief among these is copy cataloging and processing library materials in accordance with the department’s Cataloging Manual and national best practices. Working closely with the Catalog and Metadata Librarian, you will efficiently develop and verify accurate, useful, and complete catalog records with Dewey classification-based call numbers. You will prioritize the end user by balancing high-quality copy cataloging and processing with quick turnaround of materials and participate in cataloging projects and database maintenance. You will work collaboratively with the cataloging team to review, develop, and implement cataloging policies and procedures and share thoughts with colleagues regarding cataloging rules and practice. You will support the department’s operations through additional clerical duties that include processing incoming serials issues, preparing cash reports, and fulfilling internal and external copy requests.

      About You

      Our ideal candidate has:

      • A passion for archives and special collections work in a public library setting

      • Understanding of MARC bibliographic records

      • Knowledge of cataloging rules and practices, including RDA and Dewey classification

      • Ability to use basic workplace technology including email, internet, and office software

      • Ability and interest in learning new software

      • Experience with Polaris, OCLC Connexion, and other cataloging software preferred but not required

      • Skill at managing multiple projects at once

      • Ability to creatively and collaboratively solve problems and ask questions in a collegial environment

      • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively

      • Ability to follow workflows and thrive on attention to detail

      • Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural humility, and a sense of humor in working with customers, coworkers, and community members

We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements will be considered:

      • A Bachelor's degree.

      • One year of experience working with bibliographic records to support access to library materials or relevant coursework.
