      Job summary

      The post advertised is for a Locum (1 Year) Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with an interest in Upper Limb Orthopaedic Surgery, this post is to support a growing need to deliver treatment of patients with Upper Limb conditions from an elective and Non-elective perspective. The post holder will be joining a team of clinicians keen to deliver high quality care and innovate within the current national healthcare landscape.

      The post is based at Darlington Memorial Hospital, and will contribute to providing a 1 in 9 trauma service, with elective clinic and theatre sessions at Bishop Auckland Hospital and Darlington Memorial Hospital, satellite community hospitals and the University Hospital of North Durham site as and when required, although the latter is anticipated to be in rare circumstances.

      The basic contract is for 10 programmed activities plus an additional 3% for a 1:9 on call week. There will need to be a discussion with the post holder regarding the final plan/on-call arrangements, prior to commencement of the appointment.

      This post is to compliment the organisations current plans to establish Bishop Auckland Hospital as an Elective Surgical Hub.

      Main duties of the job

      The post advertised is to compliment an existing sub speciality team of 3 full time Upper Limb Consultants based in Darlington that provide care to patients across the trusts full geographical catchment. The Upper Limb Service is consolidated to the Darlington and Bishop Auckland site from an inpatient treatment perspective; with specialist input in Durham Hospital deployed as and when required. The post holder will work with a strong upper limb sub specaility team of consultants with speciality doctor supporting their practice.

      The post holder will have their base site at Darlington Memorial Hospital but will also include clinics and theatre sessions in Bishop Auckland Hospital and peripheral clinics. Possession of a valid UK driving licence is essential.

      Applicants should have completed their FRCS (Orth) and be on the General Medical Council Specialist Register or be within 6 months of CCT at the time of the interview date. They should have a good overall level of experience with all aspects of Orthopaedic trauma in terms of operative and non-operative management and have been trained to fellowship level in their subspecialty area.

      Job description

      Job responsibilities

      1. The post holder will be based at Darlington Memorial Hospital but will also provide a comprehensive Orthopaedic Surgery Service across the full CDDFT patch. They will be involved, in conjunction with colleagues in Orthopaedic Surgery, for planning future developments in the service. The Consultant has a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and for the proper functioning of the department in which he/she works.

      2. For management purposes and use of resources the post holder will be accountable to the Clinical Lead for Orthopaedic Surgery and will ensure the effective and efficient use of resources allocated.

      3. The post holder will be responsible for the professional and educational supervision of junior staff.

      4. The post holder will be expected to participate in the postgraduate teaching of medical staff as well as teaching of undergraduates attached to the Trust and in the training of all grades of staff.

      5. Research activities, which are considered to be an inherent part of normal clinical duties, will be encouraged and limited research funding may be available following successful applications to the local Research and Development Committee.

      6. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) the post holder is responsible for ensuring that he/she meets the national requirements for CPD, both internal and external. He/she will be expected to attend regularly and contribute to the weekly half-day educational session held by the Directorate.

      7. It is expected that the post holder will participate in clinical audit.

      8. The post holder will be expected to participate in clinical governance arrangements in line with national and local guidelines and in respect of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the Trust in accordance with current best practice.

      9. If the post holder is involved in the care of a patient who subsequently initiates a claim against the Trust he/she will be expected to provide, free of charge, an opinion and statement of facts on the case.
