      Summary of Job Duties:

      Consult with and fabricate for faculty and graduate/undergraduate students the design and construction of research and educational equipment. Maintain, troubleshoot, and service the fabrication shop equipment, CNC turning centers, and vertical machining centers. This position is governed by state and federal laws, and agency/institution policy.


      Qualifications:

      Required Education and or Experience:

      • Minimum high school diploma required;
      • Must demonstrate excellent computer skills, including job-specific software such as SolidWorks, CAM Works, Word, and Excel;
      • Ability to deadlift up to fifty pounds, climb ladders/stairs and stand for long periods;
      • Must perform routine maintenance on metalworking tools such as mills, lathes, grinders, band saws, drill presses, etc.;
      • Must have experience using hand and power tools for metal and woodworking;
      • Must be able to weld aluminum and stainless steel.

      Job Duties:

      • Fabricate equipment, tooling, and other devices for research and educational endeavors;
      • Render 3D models of parts for prototyping/assemblies, reference, and billing;
      • Design/generate part models utilizing CNC and other computer-aided manufacturing software for the fabrication of parts, machines, and equipment;
      • Consult with faculty, staff, and students in the conceptual stages of new projects and subsequent phases of existing projects.

      Additional Job Duties (Non-Essential)

      • Consult with off-campus academia, industry, small/start-up businesses, and the community at large to assist in the development of conceptual design, prototyping, and manufacturing;
      • Enhance student interest by facilitating real-world learning opportunities, hands-on demonstrations, and experience in conjunction with both research and senior design projects;
      • Assist with repair and maintenance of GIT-maintained equipment and instrumentation.

      Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

      • Journeyman toolmaker skills to fabricate special tools to precisely manufacture custom parts and machines for faculty and student research projects;
      • Journeyman status or equivalent welding experience using MIG, TIG, stick, and oxy-acetylene;
      • Sheet metal working experience using shears, rolls, and brakes;
      • Proficiency in computer-aided drafting, including SolidWorks and CAM Works;
      • Proficiency with computer-aided manufacturing and CNC machining;
      • Proficiency in using woodworking tools, equipment, and supplies;
      • Extensive knowledge of machining material properties;
      • Forklift operation and experience with rigging and lifting;
      • Able to follow verbal and written instructions;
      • Able to be a confident decision-maker.
