      Job summary

      An exciting senior opportunity has arisen in the NHSE London Regional Team, to lead the Higher Level Responsible Officer (HLRO) statutory function, which sits within the Medical & Digital Transformation Directorate. The HLRO function provides assurance that the Responsible Officer and Performers List regulations are complied with and the associated statutory duties of NHS England are met, in accordance with the Medical Profession Responsible Officer Regulations (2010 & 2013 Amendment) and the National Health Service Performers Lists England Regulations (2013).

      The team is led by the Medical Director and Lead for Professional Standards and is supported by a Programme Manager HLRO and small team of Revalidation Coordinators. They are the first point of contact for the designated bodies for any queries regarding revalidation in London. This team supports all designated bodies connected with NHS England London region, including NHS organisations, the independent sector, faculties, locum agencies, hospices and charities. The team works closely with the Higher Level Responsible Officer/Regional Medical Director and Responsible Officers connected to NHS England, as well as maintaining strong working relationships with teams across NHS England and partner organisations, such as the General Medical Council, Care Quality Commission and NHS Employers.

      Main duties of the job

      The Medical Director and Lead for Professional Standards is a part-time medical role and we are seeking to appoint for 5 sessions with the appointee joining the Directorate Senior Management Team (SMT). The appointee will have responsibility for aspects of both strategy development and operational functioning of the appraisal system at a regional level and supporting the wider strategy development for designated bodies across the region. This will include incorporating evidence and innovation from studies of professional performance, organisational development, patient safety and improvement science into our development programmes.

      Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.

      Essential

      • Medical practitioner fully registered under the Medical Act 1983 continuously for the previous five years; must continue to be fully registered whilst undertaking the role of Associate Medical Director
      • Educated to masters level or equivalent level or equivalent experience of working at a senior level in a relevant specialist area.

      Knowledge and experience

      Essential

      • In depth additional expert knowledge acquired over a significant period of time in appraisal and revalidation e.g. as a Responsible Officer or Associate Medical Director for Revalidation, Director of Medical Education, Associate Postgraduate Dean or programme director/Head of School
      • Proven and significant leadership experience and/or formal management qualification.
      • Experience of successfully operating in and delivering priorities in a partnership environment
