      Job Description Summary:

      The Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Technician is a Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Technician, responsible for performing and reporting test results that may require a conclusion, evaluation or value judgment; responsible for performing related quality control, quality assurance, equipment operation and maintenance, and associated clerical functions, specimen management functions; responsible for the general, technical and scientific oversight of the laboratory in the absence of the Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Manager and/or technical supervisor.

      The Clinical Laboratory Scientist provides services of both a technical and non-technical nature in the laboratory service area. Duties include: preparation of specimens for processing in the laboratory; performance of moderate and high complexity analytical processes, performing, and documenting quality assurance, quality control and equipment maintenance; recognizing problems and identifying causes; developing alternatives and determining solutions; confirming and verifying results through an in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments; correlating and interpreting data based on knowledge of factors affecting test results; data handling and input; and routinely interacting with patients/clients in all age/developmental categories. Responsible for oversight of the laboratory’s quality assurance, proficiency testing, competency assessment, hazardous waste management, safety, physician testing service, and other administrative functions in the absence of the Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Manager.

      Qualifications:

      • As applicable to assigned area(s):
      • Clinical Lab Tech:
      • Associates degree in Medical Technology or related science required.
      • Completion of an accredited ASCP Medical technician intern-training program required.
        • Montana State license as a Clinical Laboratory Technician required.
      • Excellent organizational skills, detail-oriented, a self-starter, possess critical thinking skills and be able to set priorities and function as part of a team as well as independently.
      • Commitment to working in a team environment and maintaining confidentiality as needed.
      • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with various audiences.
      • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy.
      • Possess and maintain computer skills to include working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn other software as needed.

      Job Specific Duties:

      • Performs quality control (QC) and documentation per department protocol for assigned area(s). Monitors and evaluates QC for test results according to established protocols.
      • Performs accreditation-related tasks to include, competencies in the CAP Competency Program and proficiency testing.
      • Maintains competency in computer skills and updates and modifies application additions to appropriate systems. Accurately orders/cancels tests, verifies results and documents in Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
      • Contributes to the writing and revisions of polices and procedures as applicable to assigned area(s).
      • Specific job duties as applicable to a Clinical Lab Tech:
        • Performs clinical patient testing utilizing a variety of technologies. Evaluates specimen integrity, patient/specimen identification, instrument function and appropriate lab technique at every stage and request clarification and assistance as needed.
        • Performs testing in a timely manner and maintains efficiency with specimen.
        • Performs specimen processing and evaluates specimen requirements of all tests.
        • Appropriately packages specimens for transport to reference laboratories. Maintains knowledge of state and federal shipping and transport requirements for infectious and hazardous materials.
        • Assists in billing requirements for referral tests. Reviews and reconciles reference laboratory invoices for accuracy.
        • Monitors and maintains adequate supplies for specimen collection and transport of referral tests.
      • Specific job duties as applicable to a Histology Tech:
        • Accurately processes, cuts, and stains blocks of tissue specimens per department protocol for assigned area(s).
        • Reviews and evaluates test results and follows up on abnormal or problematic results per department protocol.
        • Prepares reagents, stains, and solutions for total processing of specimens.
        • Assists in inventory and stocking of supplies and prepares fresh reagents per department protocol.
        • Maintains indexed files, slides, and proficiency in retrieval of paraffin blocks, slides and reports per department protocol.

      Maintains regular and consistent attendance as scheduled by department leadership.

      Schedule: Day 8 hour shift with participation with on call
