      POSITION OVERVIEW: (non-exempt)

      Collect biological specimens by appropriate methods and perform laboratory tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of patient diseases.

      QUALIFICATIONS:

      • Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or related science field (MT) OR Associate’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or related science field (MLT)
      • One year of clinical training in an approved program
      • ASCP or equivalent certification, or ability to become certified

      ACCOUNTABILITY:

      Reports to Laboratory Manager

      DIRECT REPORTS:

      None

      POSITION-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

      • Perform duties of testing personnel for high and moderate complexity test as determined by “CLIA 88” and listed in the lab policy and procedure manual.
        • Perform duties of a general supervisor as outlined in “CLIA 88”.
        • Develop an understanding of the various tests done in each department.
        • Able to answer questions about the tests or obtain answers from various resources to answer questions.
      • Collect biological specimens quickly and efficiently with minimum discomfort to the patient.
        • Follow universal precautions when collecting specimens.
        • Collect specimens in the correct tubes or containers.
        • Label specimens correctly.
        • Order tests correctly using the computer, referral lab requisitions, or other special forms.
      • Perform, under minimal or no supervision, the technical work in each department to complete the tests.
        • Become familiar and proficient with the operation of the various instruments found in the lab.
        • Set up equipment, reagents, and supplies needed to perform each test.
        • Perform preventative maintenance on instruments according to manufacturer’s recommendations. Document performance of maintenance.
        • Perform troubleshooting procedures according to instrument operating manuals or as directed by technical service personnel over the telephone.
        • Record test results accurately on worksheets and/or work cards.
      • Complete lab reports to send test results to the appropriate people.
        • Discuss any unusual lab results with the lab manager, technical, or clinical consultant before reporting.
        • Make the appropriate computer entries to finalize reports.
        • Distribute completed reports to patient charts, physician offices, mail, or fax as requested.
      • Perform required quality control testing.
        • Interpret results as it applies to testing.
        • Perform corrective actions based on quality control testing.
        • Record results for monthly reporting.
      • Monitor reagent and consumables inventory.
        • Record items that need to be ordered.
        • Check supplies in when received and QC as needed.
        • Clean and restock work areas as necessary,
        • Clean glassware as necessary.
      • Able to work and be “on call” with other lab personnel to cover weekends, holidays, and vacations to provide 24-hour coverage for laboratory services.
      • Perform other duties as designated or required.
        • Assist in writing or revising policies and procedures.
        • Help research new tests.
        • Help with comparison studies and recording result for analysis.
        • Assist in training employees as needed on new or revised procedures.
        • Attend all required meetings and in-services.
        • Serve on various teams as assigned.

      WORK ENVIRONMENT :

      • Works in a well-illuminated, climate-controlled environment
      • May come in contact with hazardous chemical or treatment modalities
      • Possibility exists of exposure to communicable diseases
      • Involvement in inpatient care may result in unavoidable work-related illness or injury
      • Work environment is comfortable, with minimal exposure to physical hazards
      • Moderate to loud noise environment when machines/equipment in use
      • Involvement in checking in/moving of supplies may result in unavoidable work-related injury
      • Must be constantly alert for patient/family emergency situations
