Position currently qualifies for a telework option. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.
This position functions as a member of the Fire Staff with the NC Forest Service and reports directly to the Wildland Fire Supervisor (Fire Chief). As a member of Fire Staff, the position will be expected to serve in rotation as Fire Staff Duty Officer as well as function in this role at peak dispatching times.
This position is responsible for the oversight and coordination of all wildfire mitigation programs in the Western 50 counties of North Carolina. These programs include Firewise and Firewise Communities USA, Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPPs), Community Protection Program (CPP), and Fire Adapted Communities. All these programs are aimed at reducing the wildfire risk in the Wildland Urban Interface. This is accomplished through a variety of mitigation actions and outreach efforts to educate the public about their wildfire risk.
This position will serve as the coordinator for the web based Southern Wildfire Risk Assessment GIS modeling application for North Carolina. As coordinator for the application this position is responsible for granting access and promoting its use among fire managers and the public to provide a clear picture of the overall wildland fire risk across the state.
This position will be responsible managing portions of the National Fire Plan Grants which is a long-term investment by the federal government to help protect communities and natural resources while protecting the lives of firefighters and the public. The grant management will include monitoring balances and expenditures from the grant accounts and ensuring grants are being applied according to federal standards. This includes making sure proper documentation is collected and reconciled for all expenditures against the grant account.
This position is also expected to assist with wildfire response across the state as needed and become qualified in a position to serve on one of the NCFS Complex Incident Management Teams. This includes response in NC as well as other southern states when compact assistance is needed.
This position will serve on the State Emergency Response Team (SERT) and will fulfill duties as needed at the State EOC during periods of all hazard disaster response.
Work hours are typically 8-5, Monday-Friday. Some work will require evening, holiday, and weekend work. The NC Forest Service is the State of NC lead on wildland emergency response and fire suppression and is a member of the State Emergency Response Team. There is overnight travel required and at times may be extended days of 16+/- depending on situation; required On-Call status, 7days/week during periods of high fire danger or impending natural disaster.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both.
Bachelor s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in the occupational area assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
