      Job Description

      The New York Times is looking for someone to join our Newsroom Operations team as a news assistant on our International desk, working with editors on many departmental functions.

      This is a hybrid position and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. This is a Guild position reporting to the Deputy Director, Newsroom Operations.

      Responsibilities:

      The duties of the news assistant may include, but are not limited to, the following:

      • Update budget planner and calendar

      • Web production

      • Maintain department documents

      • Coordinate communication and help schedule meetings for department editors. Remind editors of appointments and other unfinished business

      • Screen and sort mail, send out newspapers, answer telephone calls and manage other incoming information for the department

      • Attend daily meetings and take notes that will then be shared with the department

      • Proofreading and fact-checking duties

      • Audience-related tasks, i.e. SEO and URL verification

      • Monitor for breaking news

      Also, news assistants may be called upon to help ensure the smooth administrative operation of the assigned desk by performing a variety of tasks under the supervision of desk editors and/or the operations managers, including:

      • Maintain varied departmental files and personnel and other office records including work and vacation schedules, timebanks, whereabouts lists and payroll records

      • Assist editors and operations managers with processing of freelance and staff payments

      • Learn and utilize evolving administrative tools and working with editors and operations managers to help create and apply newsroom policies on the assigned desk

      • Arrange equipment repairs as directed; assisting others in maintaining equipment inventory in support of staff; ensure all supplies are fully stocked and new requests are filled in a timely manner

      • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

      While reporting and rewriting shall not be a general requirement of the work of a News Assistant, any employee so classified may perform such work in limited amounts for no additional compensation. The amount of reporting and rewriting a News Assistant is permitted to perform without additional compensation shall result in the publication of no more than 1500 words in any given month, absent a bona fide news emergency.

      Basic Qualifications:

      • 2+ years of professional experience

      • A passion for learning about new tools and journalism formats

      • A collaborative attitude with an eagerness to work toward common goals on a team that values trust, transparency and empathy

      • Familiarity with Google Workspace (Google Docs, Sheets, Forms, Slides)

      • Ability to work with all levels of management and staff and manage the needs of a team of 100+ employees and leaders

      • Familiarity with project management tools like AppSheet or Airtable

      Preferred Qualifications:

      • Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent combination of training and experience

      • Be accessible after hours or on weekends when breaking news demands

      This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
      The annual base pay salary for this role is between $66,300.00 and $67,000.00.
