      Position Statement: The Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security (IEMA-OHS) is seeking a Nuclear Safety Senior Equipment Technician. This position will serve in the Agency’s Division of Nuclear Facility Safety and will be responsible for ensuring the reliability of radiological monitoring systems and related equipment.       Essential Functions

      25% 1. Fabricates, modifies, tests, and installs radiological monitoring systems and associated equipment.

      • Mechanical operations such as valve/pump/motor assembly/disassembly, tube bending, and general metalwork.
      • Electrical operations such as wiring and performing inter-connection of equipment.

      20% 2. Performs highly complex testing, troubleshooting, and repairs to radiological monitoring and measuring equipment within the Statewide Remote Monitoring System (RMS). This includes computer-controlled gamma spectroscopy systems, pressurized ion chamber gamma radiation detector systems, sensors, wiring, cabling and associated mechanical components (valves, pumps, air compressors, pipe connections, etc.):

      • Frequently troubleshoots down to the component and board level, using a variety of electronic test equipment.

      20% 3. Assists in determining need for new instruments used in the Remote Monitoring System:

      • Evaluates equipment for proposed utilization.
      • Develops specifications, prepares requisitions, performs installation or calibration upon receipt of equipment.
      • Confers with manufacturers regarding maintenance and repair of radiation measuring equipment and auxiliary equipment (air compressors, UPS, forklift).
      • May be contacted to perform emergency repairs of Remote Monitoring Systems at various nuclear power plants throughout the State, potentially inside or outside of scheduled working hours and requested to respond within ½ hour.

      20% 4. Assists the supervisor in the preparation and review of technical reports, repair schedules, inventory and record control management, and maintenance tracking programs.

      • Monitors specific equipment in the RMS on a daily/weekly/monthly basis for correct operation.

      5% 5. Performs duties of assigned team positions as specified in the Standard Operating Procedures of the Illinois Plan for Radiological Accidents.

      • Remains available for call-back during emergency conditions at nuclear facilities.

      5% 6. Serves as the lead or co-lead on forklift training for Office of Nuclear Safety buildings.

      • Stays up to date with NFS training requirements including monthly training days.

      5% 7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

      Minimum Qualifications

      1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of: (a) a Bachelor’s Degree with major courses in electronic technology, chemistry, health physics, biology, or related scientific field plus two (2) years of appropriate experience; or (b) an Associate Degree with major courses in electronic technology, chemistry, health physics, biology, or related scientific fields plus four (4) years of appropriate experience.

      Preferred Qualifications

      1. Three (3) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of highly complex equipment.

      2. Two (2) years of experience utilizing effective communication methods, both orally and in writing.

      3. Two (2) years of experience in recognizing and correcting nuclear radiation monitoring equipment malfunctions.

      4. Two (2) years of experience in use and operation of high technology test equipment.

      5. Prefers knowledge of trades professions, i.e. welding / metalwork, electrician, etc.

      Employment Conditions

      1. A criminal history check through the Illinois State Police.

      2. Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate. Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.

      3. Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This may require the ability to work evenings and weekends.
      4. This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
      5. Requires the ability to meet the requirements of 10CFR73, thereby qualifying for unescorted access to operating nuclear power stations.
