What to Expect (Job Responsibilities):
- Prepare and process bi-weekly payroll for all City employees, ensuring accuracy in timesheets and payroll information
- Monitor and reconcile employee leave balances, ensuring compliance with City policies and regulations
- Answer payroll-related inquiries from City employees, providing guidance and resolving complex issues
- Prepare and post payroll reports, including W-2s and quarterly tax reporting, while identifying and resolving discrepancies
- Participate in payroll tax activities and maintain compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
What is Required (Qualifications):
- Minimum of three (3) years of increasingly responsible technical or clerical accounting experience, including at least two (2) years of payroll experience
- High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by specialized or college-level coursework in payroll, accounting, finance, or a related field
- Experience in payroll processing for a public agency, particularly with fire and/or police payroll, is highly desirable
- Strong attention to detail and ability to adhere to established payroll policies and procedures
- Proficient in using payroll processing systems and related software
How to Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications):
- Experience in a municipal payroll environment, particularly with fire and police payroll
- Familiarity with California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) regulations and processes
- Advanced knowledge of payroll processing software and financial reporting tools
- Strong analytical skills and ability to create and manage financial reports
- Excellent communication skills for interacting with diverse stakeholders
