      Shift Available: PRN Nights 7p-7a

      The PICU units at The Children's Hospital are specially designed to meet the needs of children. All of the unit's physicians and nurses are pediatric specialists, and are focused on providing developmentally appropriate care. Coming in 2019 - a new 34-bed unit, resulting in a total capacity of 46 beds, to include PICU, CVICU, and Step-Down. PICU Services Unique to the Region: - Pediatric Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) - Pediatric Dialysis - Otolaryngology (ORL) or Ear, Nose and Throat services - Craniofacial disorders - Kidney Transplantation - Complex Thoracic Surgery The physician staff performs complicated surgeries that include heart, orthopedic, craniofacial, neurosurgery and complicated general surgeries. We have four Pediatric Intensive Care doctors on staff. We also have endocrinology, nephrology and hematology/oncology programs. Every nurse in the PICU is certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support. Many have National Pediatric Certifications and/or Pediatric Critical Care Nursing, Chemo or Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications. The PICU supports families and never tries to separate a child from their family. Families are part of the daily routine in caring for any child in the unit. They are consulted about their child's care and are involved at every level. All units at The Children's Hospital are focused on family-centered care.       General Description: Serves as Health Unit Coordinator and Care Team Associate.

      Essential Responsibilities:

      Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position. Inability to perform these responsibilities with or without an accommodation may result in disqualification from the position.

      • Under direct supervision of the RN and in collaboration with the patient and family, systematically and continually monitors the patient’s health status and implements the plan of care.
      • Carries out physician and nursing orders as directed by the RN.
      • Takes/records blood pressures, temperatures, pulse, and weighs patients.
      • Performs blood glucose monitoring.
      • Monitors intravenous infusions and transfusions as directed by RN.
      • Sets up and discontinues telemetry monitor.
      • Collects specimens as directed.
      • Applies sterile dressings, removal of sutures, staples and/or drains. Performs all sterile procedures as assigned.
      • Performs stomal irrigation and applies colostomy pouches.
      • Performs oral and tracheostomy suctioning.
      • Administers tube feedings to patients.
      • Takes emergency actions as required.
      • Performs all treatments and procedures as defined on initial skills checklist.
      • Reports symptoms and significant changes in patient’s condition or behavior to RN.
      • Transports patients to and from various treatment centers when necessary; assists transporters in moving patients in and out of stretchers and wheelchairs.
      • Keeps the patient’s room in clean and orderly condition; makes beds, replaces soiled linen.
      • Assists in restocking rooms with supplies and equipment as directed.
      • Duties may be performed for one patient or more than one patient.
      • When assigned to one patient, provides care, observes the patient, and does not leave the patient alone.
      • Organizes, prepares, and maintains patient medical records and files.
      • Ensures that documents are properly labeled, posted, and contain current information for billing purposes and medical record maintenance.
      • Transcribes orders of physicians and nurses; keep nurses informed of any changes in orders relating to patient care; schedule tests, treatments and services required of ancillary departments.
      • Provides receptionist type coverage for the area: handle routine patient calls, intercom pages, personal callers, route incoming mail and answer routine inquiries,
      • Assists with admissions, transfers, and discharges by coordinating, notifying and following-up with the appropriate personnel.
      • Maintains or arranges for repair of equipment.
      • Works with medical records in obtaining medical charts for patients.
      • Assists with inventory needs, ordering, stocking, and distribution of supplies.

      General Responsibilities:

      • Performs other duties as assigned.

      Minimum Qualifications :

      Education & Experience: Six (6) months experience in a healthcare setting OR completion of a health related vocational education course of at least 3 months OR completion of the first semester of clinical education in an associate or bachelor’s degree program for a health care discipline

      Licensure/Certifications/Registrations Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) upon hire.

      Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

      • Knowledge of basic nursing techniques and procedures.
      • Ability to maintain effective working relations with others.
      • Good verbal and written communication skills
      • Proficient with the use of Microsoft Office tools
